UVa continues to be rated as the 2nd best value among public universities in the US. The ranking is based upon in-state costs. UNC-CH receives much more state funding than UVa, and therefore is able to offer lower tuition. The comparative data is at the link.

I realize that. It was more of a joke. I’m an alum with an 11th grade daughter who wants to go to UVA. Anything that draws more attention to UVA is good for the alumni but bad for a dad. :)

If I had a crystal ball that told us to relax and not worry, our house would sleep a lot better at night.

Yes, Wherez, occasionally you will see guys on this website badmouthing a college in April and May. It turns out they are on a wait list and are trying to get other students to pick a different college so they can get in.

WW, Ah…I see and can appreciate your sentiments. It’s a stressful time. I have a third year and one who just went through the application gauntlet this year. I loved visiting schools with the kids, each unique with opportunity and possibilities, but honestly I’m glad that stage is behind them. Best of luck to your DD. I hope she has UVa as an option. :)

blueiguana, yeah it’s one of her top two. We live in Northern Virginia and the idea of her being at a great school so close to home would be a dream come true for her as well as the family.

I checked Naviance and it appears that this year 25% of her school’s senior class applied to UVA. I’m sure other schools in Northern Virginia have similar percentages of the seniors applying.

All of this will be over in a year and then the weight of our child leaving our house for college will sink in.

WW – You should read Crazy U by Andrew Ferguson, which is an entertaining account of one Dad’s first time through the college search/app process with his oldest kid.

Bonus is that the author is from Nova and his kid winds up getting into and attending UVA (which is referred to in the book as Big State U).

I read the book a few months ago and thought it was pretty amusing. Don’t worry, I think most readers know that he took liberties describing BSU. The “college warboard” however, seem pretty close to reality.
