UVA Dean's List

I am curious about why UVA does not send notification to hometown newspapers when students make the Dean's List. It seems like many other institutions do this, and this is a nice way to recognize student achievement. I know my local newspaper publishes a list sometime each winter and summer of DL students from public and private universities and colleges.

I have never heard of such a thing.

This doesn’t sound like a valuable use of scarce resources. It’s college, not space camp.

How does UVA notify a student they made the Dean’s List–email? letter home?

I don’t think they send any notification. You need to go on SIS and check transcript. It takes a couple of months to show up. Times have definitely changed from 35 years ago when I was a UVa student. I remember the Comm School used to send a letter to parents with a framable list of the honored students. You can thank Privacy laws for the change.

At least for the College of Arts and Sciences, a letter from the Dean is sent to the student’s permanent address several months after the semester ends.

I think the colleges that do that are mostly smaller colleges with students from a limited geographic area. UVa would need to find newspapers in 74 countries.

I didn’t realize that CLAS still sends letters. McIntire does not.

I can confirm that CLAS does send a letter home a couple of months after the close of the term.

Thanks, everyone…at least I know not to look for the letter any time soon! D is a double major (Environmental Science and Music) and we can see by her GPA she made “the list” but naturally I (proud mom) want to see a letter! S graduated from Penn State and they sent a letter about 3 weeks after the semesters ended.

Hmm…D just graduated (Raven Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Echols, Deans List, Highest Distinction, etc.), and I don’t recall ever getting any type of letter. Everything is printed on her transcript, and certificates are given for RS and PBK. UVA kids are very humble and rarely want to stand-out; everyone is a great student at UVA.

jc40, Glad your D made PBK :)

Thanks, Hazel! She already misses UVA and her friends. It was an incredible four years. Let’s just hope the next four years of medical school is also a rewarding journey!

S was in the CAS, they did not send letters.

“UVA kids are very humble and rarely want to stand-out; everyone is a great student at UVA.”

First part of that statement in pretty far from the truth unfortunately. People at UVA generally will do things for the sake of standing out and will be the first to know using the ever effective “humble brag” technique (<a href=“Urban Dictionary: Humble Brag”>Urban Dictionary: Humble Brag).

Generally approve of the second part of that statement though. People at UVA tend to be good students.

Daughter received Dean’s List letter in January 2015 for Fall 2014 as a first year in Arts and Sciences. Maybe they have changed the policy for alerting the students. I can find the statistic that 299 students in A&S were on the list, but I did not find a listing of names at UVA, although VaTech has an online listing [another offspring!] Apparently this is not much discussed at UVA among students.
