Uva? Duke?....where Else???

OK:

4.0/4.0 HS GPA (95, rank 11)
3.85 College GPA for two semesters
1270 SAT (retaking)
very strong ECs
great recommendations/references
excellent essays
out of state

I'd like to apply to UVA(maybe Duke and University of Buffalo); I know they're competitive and selective, but I've heard mixed reviews about the scores of those who attend there, and would like to know other ppl's opinion of my chances of acceptance. If you choose to opine, then please let me know a little background about yourself so I know where you're coming from (ie. education, traditional vs. nontraditional student, major, etc.).

Also, if there are any suggestions about what other colleges might be a match, please suggest away.

Thanks! :o)

It clearly depends where you went to school before but assuming its a normal state school: Duke is a no go (incredibly selective), Buffalo is an absolute safety (not very selective at all), and UVA will be a slight reach. My advice is to apply to UNC-CH. Its impossible out of state for first years but is one of the easiest top schools to get in for transfers because they drop the out of state quota. I'd say its a match and it is a smart place to apply.

if u do well on your retake, uva sounds good.

duke is a reach

You can't say he is safe at UVA until you know if he is instate or not. If you are not you are fighting an uphill battle, same with UNC first year, as was said.

PS I just saw that you are out of state. Very difficult.

same here .

actually UVA is friendly to out of state transfers as well compared to its first year admissions, although its not nearly as easy as UNC. They still favor in state where it UNC completely drops their in-state preference.

Hey, thanks a lot for responding, it's very heartening; it would be really excellent if i got into UVA, but i had never explored UNC, i don't know much about it. i would like to be near the Beltway if possible (internships, jobs, etc.)...does anyone know any other schools around that area, or even NY (surrounding states)? the SUNYs are pretty good chance, i think, but i was looking forward to going to a school that is able to fund itself well....thanks, again! btw, out of curiosity, what experience do you have with UVA and UNC? did you apply there?

My brother is at UNC, its such a hidden gem and its a huge recruitment place for internship in Washington D.C. I have been there a lot and its one of the most fun schools I have been to. The students are very cool and the academics are superb + the campus is beautiful. Its very similar to UVA, although I would say its socially much less dependant on the frat scene. There is just so much going on that the frat scene at UNC caters to a much smaller population.

My brother visited UNC and UVA when he was applying as a transfer so I know a lot about their admissions...
