Starting a thread - didn’t see one for this year’s class.
anyone know when decisions are meant to come out?
@ bagelfan26 (My son applied here too) From their page -
" Early Action is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that may be an attractive option for those feel they can present a strong application without senior grades being reviewed. We aim to release decisions of admit, defer, or deny by mid-February. Students admitted through the Early Action admission plan will have until May 1 to reserve a spot by in the incoming class. Deferred students will be reviewed during Regular Decision."
My oldest son got into UVA two years ago early action (he is at Georgia Tech now). My recollection is that he heard at the end of January. My middle son has applied this year early action as well. It should be one of the last schools he hears from!
They now have ED as of last year, so I think ED hears in January, and then that’s why EA is February.
Last year EA at UVA was Jan 31. Hopefully this year will be as well. Mid Feb seems very late to hear from EA - my son applied to 7, is in 3 and hears about a 4th on Friday. Rest are Jan/Feb
The number of applications we’re getting early has increased (I’ve talked about this during live q&a session on instagram), so the calendar has to change. Notifying earlier would require a dramatic change in how we read applications…perhaps becoming more data-driven or skipping parts of the holistic review. I don’t think our applicants would want that!
From the application instructions (be sure to read those!):
Early Decision is a binding admission plan for students who have determined that UVA is their first choice and who feel they can present a strong application without senior grades being reviewed. Students admitted through the Early Decision admission plan are required to cancel their applications elsewhere and enroll in UVA. Decisions of admit, defer, or deny will be released in mid-December and students are expected to submit deposits by January 1. Deferred students will be reviewed during Regular Decision.
Early Action is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that may be an attractive option for those feel they can present a strong application without senior grades being reviewed. We aim to release decisions of admit, defer, or deny by mid-February. Students admitted through the Early Action admission plan will have until May 1 to reserve a spot by in the incoming class. Deferred students will be reviewed during Regular Decision.
Regular Decision is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that allows students more time to complete the application and to have grades from the first term of their senior year considered in the review. Students will be notified of their admission decisions by April 1 Students admitted through the Regular Decision admission plan will have until May 1 to reserve a spot in the incoming class.
Anyone know when EA decisions for UVA are coming out?
W&M apparently on target to release ED 1 by next Friday, Dec 11th. Praying that UVA can notify by then too!
W&M released ED 1 tonight. Hopefully, you don’t have to wait much longer.
In terms of EA, UVA will probably wait to see which kids withdraw their applications due to being accepted ED elsewhere. This will lower their acceptance rate and increase their yield. So, EA decisions won’t come out until at least mid January if I’m guessing.
Other school’s timelines have zero influence on our process. There is no pressure on us to make UVA more selective. When we are done, we will let you all know!
Read through the comments above your question. It says mid-February!
Yes I am well aware of this. The reason I am speculating is because many other EA schools have put out relatively late dates for their decisions (i.e., late January-mid February) but they have released their actual decisions significantly earlier. This has also been the case in past years.
See the reply from Dean J (admissions dean at UVA) above.
No need to speculate when I’ve explained the timeline and the numbers on social media several times.
2019 ED: 2,159 (deadline was 10/15, notification was 12/6)
2020 ED: 2,918 (deadline was 11/1)
2019 EA: 25,160 (notification was 1/31)
2020 EA: 28,884
Again, other schools’ processes have no influence on the speed with which we read and finalize decisions. We work ridiculous hours and often over the weekends and holidays to get through the files.
Thanks for the clarification. Most other threads don’t have an actual admissions dean participating, so we applicants are forced to speculate.
I’ve been on CC for almost 15 years, but the traffic is so low now that I rarely check in. You can get regular (almost daily) updates from me on social media (same username). I also answer questions on reddit and the admission blog.
UVA just announced ED will be released Friday 12/11 in the PM. Good luck all! Thanks Dean J for all your hard work!
