UVA EA 2025 Thread

I checked SIS and my daughter’s financial aid award has been posted. OOS.

Did you receive a separate email with the login info for SIS?

Yes, but that was after she applied. No separate email since acceptance letter.

We never received a SIS login when we applied.

Me neither…

Our FAFSA EFC matched up well with UVA formula. Definitely reach out to see why the large discrepancy you are getting. They did sneak in $7k tuition/fee hike for OOS!!

I helped my daughter search her old emails and found the SIS set up email had arrived a few days after her portal set up email back in November.

Yep. Anything not tax sheltered is fair game. I have a friend who had her child in her 40s with an older husband who got a modest inheritance they were earmarking for retirement. They were astounded at the lack of aid they received. Seems the expectation is that you mortgage your house and spend your savings. Their son got into Michigan but at full pay it was unaffordable.

So many people are rejected where UVA is their dream school, despite having the stats and growing up in the area where every Saturday was spent at Scott Stadium. It is so heartbreaking. On the flip side, I know a few that were accepted early had prepaid tuition plans and desperately needed to get in. One didn’t even know her only option was a Virginia school until the application process was over, and UVA was the only in-state school she applied to. I am so happy for those. Luckily we decided to go with general 529s, so my children have the luxury to go anywhere. My DD decided to go in regular admission, but we have almost written them off and will focus our efforts elsewhere. My son and I both work at other Virginia colleges, and I have to say UVA rejections are good for our businesses.

Found it! Thank you

UVA just sent my daughter her financial aid log in information. No surprise…no aid! But we understand that merit scholarship recipients are notified in late March, I hope that is true! Fingers crossed!

Same boat here except they gave him some “scholarship” that was $400 a semester. We are OOS and we were laughing at why even give that. :woman_shrugging:t2:

Are their freshman merit scholarships other than the Jefferson? Thought that was essentially it.

Jefferson scholarship candidates were notified already, a month ago. You have to be elected from your HS.

Not quite true. If your HS is not eligible to nominate, you can be nominated as a finalist in the ‘at-large admissions pool’.

But if your school is eligible to nominate, then yes, you need to be nominated by your HS.

Ah… my friend DD was already notified before the admissions decision.

I believe VirginiaBelle was asking if there are other merit scholarships than the Jefferson. She was not asking about the Jefferson.

When people talk about “merit” money, they are often grouping two things together.

  1. Tuition Discounting - This is when an admission office gives you money along with your offer of admission. A lot of people will say they got a scholarship, but it’s a tuition discount. Some schools have a high tuition knowing that they will give lots of students a discount. Here’s an article with a good summary.
  2. Merit Scholarships - This is the term people often use for scholarships that don’t use need as a factor.

UVA does not practice tuition discounting. We do have scholarships, some of which do not have need as criteria. The most comprehensive list is on the Student Financial Services (we just say SFS here) website.

Within that list, there are important distinctions. There are scholarships where the student must self-identify as meeting criteria (usually because the criteria are things UVA would never know from an application) and the scholarships where SFS can figure out who meets the criteria. These are all the scholarships that are need-based at UVA.

As you’ll see on that page, other groups within UVA manage their own scholarships (Alumni Association, College of Arts & Sciences, etc).

Looks like Dean J totally just covered this. Really great information.

@Dean_J when do the actual merit scholarship recipients receive notification of award or next steps. I’m assuming that any other needs based aid has already been included.
