Eh, figured I’d start this thread because I didn’t see one. So who else applied early action to UVA?
I did!
I did.
D did
Good luck to all of y’all
D18 did big reach for oos, saw they had record number of EA applicants this year. Best of luck…
Yes - I saw the UVa posting on Facebook. I thought it was a tad bit misleading. The Facebook post said:
“This year, UVa received a record number of early applications - a 31% jump from two years ago”.
While true that it was record number of early action applications, I found it interesting that the 31% increase was relative to TWO years ago. The growth in EA applications from 2015 to 2016 was 25%; whereas, the increase from 2016 to 2017 was 5%. So, while still impressive given the riots, the rate of growth decreased materially from the prior period.
Further, in-State early applications increased 9% from 2016 to 2017. Therefore, out-of-State applications grew only 3.5% from 2016 to 2017. So, perhaps OOS students and families were more concerned about the riots than in-state families. My hypothesis is that the riots did have an effect
It’s good to see in state growth. Less OOS growth is expected as their attendance would be more expensive and they have a much lower chance of admission. But all the same, I trust that UVA will take a wonderfully diverse class this year.
Agreed @habitualnerd. The reason for my post was to encourage kids to apply. The headline in the UVa Facebook post talked about a 31% jump in applications from 2 years ago. The reaction from kids on Facebook to the post was despair and discouragement about their chances of getting in. My post highlights that applications grew this year - but, not 31%. It grew at a much smaller rate this year - so the difficulty of getting in to UVa, while very difficult, is comparable to last year (particularly for OOS students). Minority and International applications were down this year - so, their chances, assuming requisite qualifications, would seem to be improved this year - if the University is to achieve the same level of diversity. I am a proud UVa grad and hate to see kids afraid to apply this year.
Hey all, the total application number is not final at this time. All you are seeing is applications submitted. We do not use that number. We use completed applications as our number. The final number of applications will be lower because some people will not complete their applications. [I</a> explained all this on my blog over the weekend](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Preliminary #UVA Early Action Numbers).
There are no numbers about residency yet because the Office of Virginia Status must certify that those who filled out the residency section of the application are Virginia residents.
Side note: If you completed the residency questions, you’ll see the result of the Virginia Status review towards the bottom of your SIS page.
Thanks @“Dean J” . Does that mean the UVa Facebook post was premature or not accurate?
@1111bbbb If you mean [the UVA Today article](https://news.virginia.edu/content/uva-sees-record-number-early-action-applications), the writer notes that the numbers are not official. It takes a while to process 20,000+ applications.
I always post final numbers on the blog in January.
@“Dean J” - thanks! Got it. Sounds like it is too early to know whether applications (completed) increased this year.
Based on Dean J’s very informative posts from January of 2016 and January of 2017 I thought I would post a summary of some stats for EA the past 2 years.
2020 Total Applicants 16,768 (OSS 73.4%; VA 26.6%)
Acceptance rate of 31%. (OSS 24%: VA 50.2%)
Deferral rate of 24.2% (OSS 24.4%; VA 23.7)
Rejected rate 45% (OSS 51.6%; VA 26.1%)
2021 Total Applicants 20446 (OSS 73.3%; VA 5278)
Acceptance rate of 28.9% (OSS 22.3%; VA 48.8%)
Deferral rate of 26.7% (No Breakdown OSS/VA)
Rejected rate of 44.4% (No Breakdown OSS/VA)
2022 Total Applicants 21393 (OOS 72%; VA 28%)
In about 11-12 weeks we will see how the rest of the 2022 numbers will look but one would expect they would be similar to the past two years with about 30% acceptance 25% deferral and 45% rejection.
@burghdad very interesting and I too, have read these stats over the years from Dean J. I do not think that the 2022 number is final, as DeanJ said that over the upcoming weeks the total number of applicants will lower because that number will end up representing complete applications submitted (sometimes students file but never end up completing the application process). So there was approx. a 21% increase from 2020 to 2021 in EA apps and only 5% from last year to this year. I wonder why that is? Are there less students applying to college (maybe we already hit a peak) or is there another reason? I surely hope it has nothing to do with what happened there earlier this year. UVA is one of the best schools out there and a fantastic community to study!
@LvMyKids2 - that was my read as well. It looks like based on submitted applications, there would be only a 4.6% increase this year. As Dean J indicated, the number of completed applications has historically been smaller than the submitted applications. So, it will be interesting to see how much smaller than 4.6% the growth number ends up being this year. @burghdad - do you know what the historical % of submitted applications end up getting completed? If more than 947 (~ 4.4%) submitted applications for EA do not get completed, the number of EA completed applications would actually decrease compared with last year. If the in-State growth of submitted applications holds at near 9% (per the UVa Today Facebook article), it is very possible that OOS applications were flat or declined this year. Nonetheless, given the riots, it is a testament to the greatness of UVa that the impact is not more pronounced.
I am a bit busy, but if you want to dig into submitted/completed/offered/whatever numbers, [you can play with the tables on this page](http://ias.virginia.edu/university-stats-facts/undergraduate-admissions).
My personal, non-data driven opinion: a lot of people out there are pressuring students to submit early applications. I think we’ll continue to see a shift to early, no matter how often we on the college side explain that our review style isn’t more lenient during Early Action at UVA.
@DeanJ but what would be your opinion on why the increase from last year to this year is approx. 4.6% and jump from the Class of 2020 to Class of 2021 was approximately 21%. That is, the overall increase is significantly less than prior years’ increases year over year for EA applications. I guess I am not sure I understand your above comment on seeing the push for early applications, as it appears to me, there really wasnt a huge increase in the number of EA for UVA (as above poster stated @1111bbbb it might even be that after we get hard numbers on the EA applications, applications for EA are flat or declined this year over last year). Thank you for your time. (I am an alumni of UVA and went there for both graduate and undergrad and will always have the love of UVA and its best interests at heart!).
@1111bbbb very interesting post you made. Yes, I would agree that the riots did not appear to have a significant impact…or hope that is the case. There are issues everywhere and I’ll bet we could find something near every college campus that one could have issue with. Having said that, on a selfish note…maybe having the OOS application pool drop will be a good thing when my child applies in a few years!
The OOS pool is historically MUCH larger than the instate pool. There are MANY more OOS applications every year relative to available OOS seats. Any minor changes in the OOS applicant pool, either up or down, are unlikely to have any significant impact. It will continue to be very selective for both instate and OOS students.
