Demonstration of Good Character: What
Any hooks: Is homeschooled a hook?

Thoughts on why you received that decision: My test scores, essays, and story were my strong points, and UVA seems to prioritize those things comparatively less. But I know I tried my best and was proud of the application I sent in, so no regrets here at all. I got some other good acceptances earlier in the EA process, so although this was my first rejection it didn’t hurt at all. Keep your head held high people.

Thoughts on why you received that decision: Son attends private school where half of the students are from VA, so competition within the school is strong. We knew this was a reach based on this situation. Had he gone to a MD public school, it may have been different. He is totally ok with the decision as he got into his first choice school already. Congrats to all who were accepted. He loved UVA when he visited.

Any hooks? First generation, low income, Questbridge National Finalist

Thoughts on why you received that decision: Questbridge designation made them overlook low SAT a bit (may not be enough to overcome it in the long run) and strength of gradually increasing GPA with strong Senior rigor. Essays spoke to first gen/low income/overcoming obstacles

Demonstration of Good Character: Teacher recs / essays
Any hooks? I think my essays are what really pushed me foward.

Thoughts: I was really anxious due to being an OOS student going to a private VA school where a ton of the students apply to UVA, but one again I truly think what made me stand out were my essays.

Congrats to those who got in, and I hope everyone has a nice day!

Any hooks? Not that I can think of lmao

Thoughts on why you received that decision: I am honestly so shocked that I got in, because I was sure that I would get deferred or denied. Compared to all the stats that I’ve seen so far, I am definitely on the lower end, but it goes to show that UVA doesn’t focus on test scores and GPA. I think what helped me was my rigor of classes, my extracurriculars, and my recommendations

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: from a teacher I had for both US history and Capstone, she’s the best teacher I’ve ever had and she knows me very well so hers was definitely good.
Teacher Rec #2: from my art history teacher, Im absolutely fascinated by art history and he knows that so I’m sure it was good.
Counselor Rec: My counselor generally had a lot of faith in me and got to know me very well throughout the college process so I think she painted a good picture of me as a student and person in her rec

Reflection

Strengths: essays, legacy, extracurriculars, Posse, race
Weaknesses: test scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Students are made to think that GPA and test scores are everything, which is why I wasn’t really sure that I would get in. I am very involved in my community and am a very strong writer, which is what I think really helped my application. I think colleges really want a student who can think critically and be a passionate and active member on their campus. Also I was a Posse Foundation Finalist at the time of the application, and UVA is one of the foundation’s partner schools. I also am legacy, I’m not sure how much UVA looks at that.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Syracuse and UCF
