UVA Early Action Thread: Class of 2023

@SlimJim005 - I have to wonder why they are rejecting men with your qualifications when the classes last year were only 46% men at UVA and 39% at NC. If they were rejecting women with your stats and there were only 39% females in the class, I’m sure there would be an uproar.

There is no reason these very competitive universities shouldn’t have very balanced classes by gender.

@tpike12 Thanks for responding. It is really odd. My test scores were well over last year’s 75th percentile for each school’s profile for OOS accepted students. Obviously, I don’t know what that number is for this year, but I can’t fathom why I was denied outright for both. So, I’m assuming my race and gender had something to do with it.

Received acceptance to UMich and WUSTL and UChicago , full rides Case Western and UNC, but defered from UVA In-state :\

Congrats new Hoos! I am currently a second-year pre-med, so if you have any questions about UVA feel free to hmu!

Son accepted OOS to UNC, but deferred instate to UVA. 1570, 35, NMSF, 4.152 at incredibly difficult HS, will graduate with 12 AP, currently AP Scholar w/ distinction, two perfect SAT subj test scores, Gov School, Varsity athlete and co-mvp, club president, outside research with a college prof. Good kid.

Arguably more difficult to be admitted OOS to UNC than instate to UVA. Bizarre. One thing we have come to accept as parents, this process is arbitrary and capricious. The schools are entitled to make their judgments, they do it, and that is that. But to make sense of it from school to school is impossible.

@D.Matt1234 how were you already notified about the full ride to UNC? Was this this year?

@McLeanMadman What major and is the GPA weighted or unweighted? Thanks.

So you ED’d to Washu? @“D.Mat1234”

A&S and W

does uva mail acceptance letters?

@“D.Mat1234” not sure why you would be continuing to get acceptances and haven’t pulled your apps yet if you got in WUSTL ED??? that is binding. So either you are making up stories about all of your acceptances, or are clearly not being on the up and up.

@McLeanMadman Looking at Naviance, what is the average weighted GPA for accepted students from your HS?

McLean Madman - I agree with your sentiments. Son accepted OOS to UNC also! Deferred OOS to UVA. 1530 SAT, 10 AP’s, (A’s in all so far), AP Scholar with honors or distinction - I can’t remember. GPA 4.34 W. 3 varsity sports, Captain of Varsity track. Elected student Govt officer - 4 years, Outside internship with Major hospital, research with another hospital… original research for senior capstone project. All kinds of academic honors, job, other leadership positions… (Naviance for our school says that he should be in. Not that Naviance is all knowing.)

The only thing is that he is top 10% in his class but probably not in the top 3 if they care about that. He took a very difficult math path. Honors precalc and Trig in 10th grade and it was hard. Only 4 kids did that and he was one of them. So he challenged himself and got a B+. It definitely cost him in terms of class rank but the rigor is definitely there. I was under the impression that UVA cares about rigor. I guess we will find out. UVA is his top choice and he feels happy to still be “alive” in the process.

Congrats on OOS UNC. Our college counselor said that the OOS UNC effective accept rate is about 4% because of the tightened in-state requirements and then the athletes and international are in the OOS pool.

@NewPoster123 and @catmomof3 you should disregard D.Matt1234 as this poster seems to be trolling as they have also posted their acceptance in 2016 to selective schools.

and for the record… the asterisks in my post above is NOT what I typed and absolutely does NOT represent a swear word! I was referring people who post misinformation regarding stats, their acceptances, etc., which in turns creates drama and stress for others. (starts with a t, ends with an l … and has rol in the middle!)

Congrats to all the new potential Hoos! I highly recommend going to DOTL and hearing what the administration, professors and current students have to say - it is quite the event! Eat in the dining hall and visit downtown Charlottesville (such a neat town!) Although my D18 ended up at another school, UVA was really hard to turn down - truly an amazing school with great history and traditions! My S23 already has it on his list!

Our S19 was admitted on Friday evening and he’s very excited. We are OOS (from Texas) and will not qualify for any need-based financial aid. Does anyone know whether UVA offers any type of waiver of the out of state tuition increase for non-need based applicants? While UVA is an incredibly highly ranked school and would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him, the $30,000+ tuition increase for OOS students may make it financially untenable for us. We have 2 more children to put through school in the next several years and he’s already been accepted into the major of his choice at UT.

@UTDad1995Grad We are in the same boat except that the difference between in-state and out-of-state for us is $50,000 or more because our in-state engineering school has free lottery funded tuition. My son loved UVA but his in-state choice (Ga Tech) is hard to compete with since he wants to be an engineer. He loved UT also - congrats to your son! To my knowledge there is no tuition waiver. I am not sure if there is even much merit aid outside of the Jefferson scholarship which is a full ride. He is waiting to hear about the scholars program and any potential merit aid before making a final decision.

House will be divided here too. Daughter is a soph at VT and son got accepted into UVA/2023 class. Happy for both and will root for both schools. Congrats to parents whose children got accepted and good luck to parents whose children got deferred. I just love the state of virginia! Always read posts here on CC but this is my first posting.!

Hi everyone! I’m a current first-year at UVA and I am so excited for everyone who received good news in this past week! Also, I know that some of you are not receiving the news that you or your child would have liked to hear. If that is the case, just remember that, while rejections/deferrals hurt, they are certainly not the end of the world, and you will end up where you are supposed to be. Last year, I was rejected from my top choice (which hurt a lot) but ended up going to UVA, and I have had the most incredible time here. I could not imagine being anywhere else. If you have any questions about life on grounds (dorms, clubs, classes, the food, etc.), please do not hesitate to ask me! I will try to answer them to the best of my ability! Have a wonderful day!

@NewPoster123 I am not obligated to pull my early apps when I am accepted into WashU ED, I am obligated to attend WashU. My counselor encouraged me to not pull my apps after getting into WashU in case something fell through with WashU such as a financial crisis (parent losing a job making it so that I couldn’t afford WashU, etc.). I don’t hop onto CC to make up stories for anonymous people to see. That doesn’t make sense.

So yes, I’m “on the up and up.”

@dophie Yes I applied WashU ED.

@catmomof3 I received nearly a full ride to UPitt, not UNC. I apologize but UPItt seemed to cut out of my post. I did not receive any money from UNC (Although I was accepted EA this year  )
