UVA Early Action Thread: Class of 2023

Does anyone have an eta with decisons?

I am pretty sure that it was the 23rd-25th, but due to more applicants it may be later.

wow - this is asked like a dozen times in this thread over the past few weeks.

You will never know until day it happens … and it will be any time between now and next Thursday. They have said 25th last year so I wouldn’t expect before this Friday. You’ll just have to check every evening from now until next Thursday.

Dean J has an admissions blog called “Notes From Peabody”. It’s a wealth of information and her current blog, which was posted on January 15th, is titled, “A #UVA Early Action Non-Update Update”. It’s a great read and answers all your questions about past notifications, number of applications, and why they honestly can’t give you a date. I strongly recommend this blog to everyone. (She’s also on Twitter and Instagram!)

@jdecker9 , @citymama9 - I can promise you, they’re not. At least, they’re not Ivy stats for an Asian male. They were not good enough for GA Tech (OOS)!

@Essel so many things go into the decision besides Stats. I know several who got into Ivy’s this year with 1400s and 32s. And several who didn’t with over 1550 and 35-36. So… we never know why they take some and not others. Holistic approach they say.

When you have a 35 ACT and a 4.0 then you are qualified to get into an Ivy. However,I agree that there are always other things they are looking for. It’s always about what do you bring that they need. @Essel

I have two students attending UVA and I would say that there is a good change that decisions will come out on Friday, I remember reading from Dean J that they like to release the results in the evening so that students are home with their families for support, they don’t want students checking decision at school and some students get in and some don’t and the drama that would be distracting at school. So, they are released when the West coast students are out of school. She has also said that they like to release on Friday so that students have the weekend to think about the results and not have to go to school the day after the results come out. Although I believe regular results came out on a Thursday last year. Friday gives them the weekend for the drama to settle down. If they wait until next week then they would have to release them before Friday to make the end of January, so while they could wait until next week if not ready, I think there is a good chance of this Friday but probably not before. Good luck everyone!

On another note, my son and many of his friends got in UVA with Ivy league stats so I would not say that UVA doesn’t not let them in because they are afraid of yield. If the student has a good application that they can tell they thought about in their supplemental essays then I think they will get in. Many students who apply to Ivy league schools apply to UVA as a backup and many end up at UVA. We also know in state students who got into Ivy league schools but because of the cost they choose UVA so I would not worry about not getting in because you have high stats.

We are from the northeast and my D is a first year at UVA. She turned down an IVY and many other top schools for UVA. She has friends at the school who also turned down IVYs including Yale, Penn and Cornell. And those are only the ones that I know of. UVA has top quality students who love the environment at UVA. She loves it there. She convinced us that the IVY brand isn’t all its cracked up to be, and she was right. UVA is a great place.

According to someone on R/A2C, his/her guidance counselor said decisions would come out tomorrow, 1/24. Also, does anyone know how UVA’s financial aid is?

I don’t know how that guidance counselor would know that decisions are coming out tomorrow, given that Dean J doesn’t even know…

@catmomof3 - Agree! Ivies are more holistic than some of the top public schools! Know many in TX - who got in to Ivies but Not in to UT Honors…because of the rule! There are 3 to 4 high schools in TX that are in Top 15 HS in the country --all (?) are magnet schools (or one is a charter?) and have much fewer number of students than a typical public school. So Top 6% is like 10 people or less and all the kids have to jump through many hoops to get in to these schools and needless to say, are most competitive schools. Hence, any one outside 6% are basically out of luck! Irony is, the top kids from these schools get in to Ivies or Berkeley, Michigan, Stanford, much better ranked schools than UT!

Hi folks,
Wishing you all the very best. Still nothing on the portal…

Hey, can someone here post the link to the UVA student portal where we’ll get our decisions? For some reason, I can’t find the link, and I’m only coming across the “SIS” portal.

@hg0987 I think you can only enter via the link they sent you.

Try: https://apply.undergradadmission.virginia.edu/apply/status

Also, when you log in to the portal, did it always say:

"The material upload option below should be used for the following:

*Updates to your application after submission. Examples are change in classes listed, recent honor or award designation, or any school disciplinary actions.

*Mid-year grades report. Mid-year grades are typically available in mid-February. Please upload a copy of your mid-year or first semester grade report. They will display on your checklist around February 1.

We respectfully ask that you refrain from submitting resumes, art supplements or official documents, such as transcripts, school reports, and teacher recommendations. Required application items must be sent directly from your school official."

I don’t remember seeing the option for uploading mid-year grades (which won’t be an available option until AFTER first round decisions are out) and I’m wondering if everyone has this or if it could be a sign of a deferral to regular decision.

@Kg2013 that is the type of school my son is in in another state. They are always in the top 5 in the country. There were 159 National Merit semifinalist with a very high index. It’s not even the top 6%, sometimes there is someone who didn’t even qualify for national merit that eeks in for some other reason. I guess it all works out in the end and the admissions counselors just know who fits best. There was a top student last year from our school 4.6 GPA, highest rigor, great stars. He didn’t get into our state school! Crazy!

Ok this wait has gotten crazy. Do they atleast announce a day before they are going to release or they announce on the same day? If they have to announce a day early, today should be the announcement day given they want to weekend for kids to sink in with the the result.

Does anyone who have kids @UVA recall whether it’s a day earlier or same day announcement on twitter/email?
I am sure, we will forget this exact date next year as we get busy with college/dorm stuff…

@eager2019 it’s announced the day of

@livm714 thank you. So we have one more day then.
