I am soliciting opinions as to the above-listed options. The UVA tuition would be OOS and UMCP (Gemstone or Honors Humanities) is a full ride (Banneker Key scholarship) with a free iPod touch. :-)

How would you compare a degree from UVA versus a degree from UMCP Honors in terms of admittance to graduate school in either law or business.

This is cross-posted in the UVA and Parents threads.

What is your projected major? If Engineering, UMD. If business, law or medicine then UVA defintiely!!!!

McIntire is in the top 10 schools for undergraduate business, #2 I THINK!!! :)

I was waitlisted and chose UMD but since then have relocated to UMiami

Theyre both good....flip a coin

no question, regardless of major...UVA. it's a public ivy! still a fantastic deal, financially, if you think in ivy league terms, which you should. good luck!

on a lesser, tho important note, there's a world of difference in the areas, as well. C'ville beats CP for many reasons. they're VERY different schools, so think about what you need/want.

Dear Happycollegemom,

Based on rankings and opportunities in a variety of fields, UMCP is a great choice. It's wonderful that you really love UVA and equate it with the Ivies (it is a great school), however, in the fields of physics, mathematics, CS, engineering, business (yes business!), nanotechnology, criminology, counseling psych and many others UMCP is equal or superior to UVA. I do believe your comments are based on prior prejudice and not a careful evaluation of the relative merits of each school.

UVA would be a great choice for some and the same is true for UMCP. One should consider costs, special programs (e.g. Honors Humanities), research opportunities, internships, the community, etc. etc. To simply rule out MD as an inferior school is ridiculus, especially if one were awarded the B/K scholarship. JMHO

UVA's out of state estimated COA is $38,000 a year. Just a thought.

In my opinion, you should weigh what the B/K scholarship can allow you to do. You can study abroad for free for a semester, or even a year (I'm going to Spain in the fall, and all I'm paying for is my plane ticket.). You can start saving for grad school or a car. I have personally loved it here at UMD, even though I could have gone to more prestigious schools.

Is the free study abroad for the full B/K award or the partial B/K award as well?

The Banneker Key scholarship is money that can be applied toward your study abroad program. If you have the full B/K, it covers the cost of most study abroad trips. I don't know how much the partial scholarship is worth next year, but it can make a huge dent in the cost of studying abroad, especially since most semester abroad programs include housing.

shallwego~ i'll stick with my posts to you about your question! for both law and business, UVA remains stronger than UMDCP.( yes, i know UMDCP is known for their business school, but IF you can get into McIntire....) McIntire, if they accept you, is tops. you didn't address any particular financial concerns. sure a free ride is great, but if the UVA tuition doesn't break your bank, it may be well worth it. both schools are terrific but since you are exceedingly fortunate to have a choice, i believe it is an obvious one, unless money is a large factor. in addition, you are apparently invited into Echols! being accepted not only to UVA OOS and to Echols sets you apart in the masses and will serve you well when you go for grad school in flooded fields like law and business.
