My son got admission into UVA scholars program. Also the Upitt honors program has given full tuition for us (VA residency). His ultimate goal is to go to good medical school.
1)
cost of attendence (UVA= tuition+room/board (25,774* 4)=~103K
Vs
cost of attendence (Upitt= room/board (12000* 4)=~48K

diff = 55K debt
2) Since the ultimate goal is to go to reputed med school. Greatly appreciate any inputs or prior experience which campus helps him to get medical exposure, standing out in class to get good recommendations and opportunity to do research and scope to publish papers to become a strong AMACS medical college applicant.

Could not find any information where the pre-med students from UVA get admissions into?

3) Any thoughts or inputs in neuro science major at both UVA (only25 students. no guarantee to get admission in to that major) VS Upitt bio engineering or biology or neuroscience majors.

Thanks in advance . We are so confused and greatly appreciate any inputs to give us some clarity.

Sincerely
Schimdt Sr.

Either college will afford him the opportunities to become a competitive applicant to medical school. On the surface, I’d advise him to go to Pitt because of the lower cost, but this is only worth it if your son feels about the same about both schools. In my anecdotal experience, students who actively dislike their school environment or culture do not do well in college, no matter how bright or promising they may be. If your son greatly prefers UVA, it may be worth going there instead - after all, what’s the point of going to a cheaper school if your son doesn’t succeed there?

I think I agree with shades on this issue. Normally I’d say go to the less expensive 1st tier University, but Pitt and UVA are just so different I think you need to look further.

Pretty Big City vs small rural, instate/OOS, weather diffs aren’t minor, UVA is a pretty Greek heavy school (1/3) and Pitt much less so (less than 10%). Sports communites within the schools are quite different plus the pro sports opps in Pittsburgh are greater (love em or hate em, you can always just go to see the opponents. These are such different places that the overall effect on College Life can’t be equated so how he feels about the 2 should be considered and I’d somehow try to find the funds if there is a strong preference for UVA. If there are more significant $$$ constraints then a deeper discussion needs to start now particularly looking at the additional MedSchool costs down the line.

I don;t think there should be a huge advantage of one school or major vs the other – both schools have a fairly large number of successful Med School applicants. Overall UVA has a bit higher overall academic reputation, but it’s not such to make it a make or break issue alone.

I’ve always hated Pittsburgh mainly b/c of their pro teams, but the city seems to a pretty nice place overall and have had several nice visits there – Carnegie supported Arts and facilities always surprises me. I love Charlottesville and the entire area. Several of my children’s classmates as well as a few of my friends have gone to UVA (UG/Grad/Professional School) and every single one of them love the place.

I agree, a lot of how well any student does at a particular school is how the student feels about the school.

Thank you all for your inputs. My son has decided to go to Upitt
