The UVA website says there is no statistical advantage to applying ED. I bellieve that I have seen data somewhere (can't remember where) that indicates for the chosen year admissions for ED's were 40% versus 30% RD. Does anyone know the real story--especially for a legacy? Also, is legacy status essentially thrown by the wayside, or otherwise diminished (although still put in the in-state pool) if the legacy applicant does not apply ED?

i know nothing about percents and all the goob but it seems to me that the UVA applicant pool is probably more competitive for RD kids because those kids who want to apply to "better" schools than UVA and sort of see UVA as more of a safety or match or slight reach or whatever are not going to apply ED because they don't want to be tied to it whereas ED kids are more likely to see UVA as their dream-school or otherwise some sort of top school. Do you see what I'm getting at?
Also, percents for ED acceptance may be higher simply because less kids apply ED than RD.

and my guess for the legacy thing is in-state status for out-of-staters in both ED and RD, but I really don't know

Legacy works same ED and RD. Applying ED probably gives some advantage.

Applying ED does give a slight advantage. The acceptance rates might be the same, but the quality of each applicant pool is different. The ED pool doesn't contain anywhere near as many top-end students and likely has a lot more who are borderline. If you're serious about UVA, applying ED is a good way to go. It will show the admissions office that you're serious about UVA, and, if you get deferred, your application will get a second look.
