UVa ED stress too! does ED really help?

I was planning to apply ED to UVa because I thought it could only help my chances. It's not like I have no chance there: 3.7 gpa, 2100 SAT, 690 average SATIIs which I'm going to retake, decent EC's, in state, full stats are here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=237880.

Anyway, my counselor told me that UVa is a lot more selective during the ED process. Apparently they only take the best. So then I told her that if I don't get accepted, at least I'll be put in with the regular admissions. She told me that , although she hasn't actually studied the statistics, she thinks that more people who apply ED get rejected than those who wait. I think this might be because those who apply regular decison ussually do not have UVa as one of there first picks and may have better stats so they're more likely to get in in that way. I'm not sure if that makes sense because I'm quite tired now but it worries me nonetheless. Everyone has been telling me to apply ED to UVa. Especially friends who are students there now. so what do you think? should I apply ED? It was kind of a major part of my big college plan so I'd like advice soon.

What's the point of admitting higher-achieving people if they ain't going to come? The vast majority of universities would rather admit solid candidates that are guaranteed to enter than geniuses who obviously aim for MIT/Harvard-esque schools and only treat the school as a safety. Go ED if you're sure about UVA. It can't hurt.

any other opinions?

We are not more selective during ED. We admit a few (about 900), deny a few, and defer a pretty big group, in hopes of seeing senior grades during the regular review. Give us a call if there are other questions about the process (we'll chat with your GC, too!).

If you are in love with UVA and will go there no matter what, apply ED.

Dean J,
If you're in love with UVA (as my DD is) should you still apply ED if finances are a major concern? She would be an OOS applicant.
We hope to attend a UVA admissions office meeting in our city on Sept. 18th.

That was the "no matter what" part, TN. If finances are a concern, RD is the best option.

We fill a little less than 1/3 of the spaces with ED applicants, so the vast majority of our students are RD applicants.

We DO NOT want to get to a point where students feel as though they must apply ED, which would happen if we started taking huge numbers from that pool and only a few from RD.
