Hey, so I got $9k per year (and honors program) at UMD and I am in-state, and UVA is giving me nada. I want to do engineering, but I definitely want to branch out and do other things like business.

Is the engineering program at UVA really good/worth it? Is UVA worth the $40000 a year? I can't make a decision ughhh

If you were only planning on studying engineering then I’d say sticking with the program at UMD would save you a lot of money. But sinec you’re interested in doing business as well, having access to classes in the Mcintire school of commerce at UVA might prove useful. I’d go UVA only if you would be willing to make the most of what UVA has to offer and shoulder 4 years of even more debt

You aren’t alone. Our family is going through the same question, only as an Echols Scholar with science instead of engineering. UVA would be approximately $30K per year more than MD Honors. Each school is good in these areas, which leaves more intangibles.

Fiftyplus,Son is graduating next month from UVa, but Maryland Honors sounds like a better option if you will need to pay $30,000 more per year for UVa. (unless you are wealthy and money is no object).

I agree with sevmom - the cost difference being what it is, the only way I see a UVA Engineering degree living up to what you can get at UMD given the price is if you pretty much destroy every course, become Judish chair or some other such high position, live on the lawn, and graduate at the top of the class with years of serious research under your belt. Seeing as how this will be monumentally difficult and will involve even a bit of luck, I’d be inclined to take UMD up on their honors program and maximize their resources.
