UVa Ex-president:UVa is overrated

bclintonk: You’ve made many valuable comments. According to press reports, the Rector did not even let some fellow board members see President Sullivan’s plan, while the Rector publicly attacked Sullivan for not having a plan. Most people who read that plan agree with it, even though it does include some cuts.

There is a steep drop off in number of academy members after Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, MIT and Princeton. Note: only Furd and Harvard have med schools.

^^^Yes we know UCB. You remind us at least once a month. ;-)

Today’s Washington Post has another article. Based on numerous interviews, the authors conclude that the ouster resulted from an unwillingness to make big cuts:

The Washington Post did a great job reporting on this. And I think the story confirms my impression from a few days ago – this was private-sector decisionmaking, and it doesn’t work well at all in a public institution context. Everything here was one-on-one, behind closed doors, and line-of-authority. But that isn’t adequate to a context where there are lots of stakeholders and – despite the governance structure – no clear single factor that is paramount for evaluating performance.

The Rector and Vice Rector have to go. Immediately. They have pooped all over themselves and the University. They may even have been right about Sullivan, but that doesn’t matter much at this point (except that Sullivan may well stay resigned). Their choice for Sullivan’s replacement probably has as much chance being elected President of the United States as President of the University of Virginia at this point.

The Washington Post article in post #85 indicated that “Dragas had reservations about Sullivan from the start.” We may never know the fundamental reason for those reservations and why they cropped up so quickly. Frankly, I wonder whether Dragas would have undertaken her campaign if Sullivan looked more like UVa alums Katie Couric or Tina Fey (or even Dragas herself).

Really? I’m perfectly willing to think the worst of Dragas (in fact, I do), but is there any evidence for that, coase? I don’t think this is a cosmetic issue.

Not sure I believe that, coarse, but I did note that one of the articles pointed out it was woman against woman. So dumb.

According to the Washington Post yesterday, Sullivan has asked to address the BOV and they have agreed so long as it happens behind closed doors. Everything about this they have done behind closed doors. I have yet to hear anything that makes me believe President Sullivan should be leaving, and at the same time, nothing to make me think the BoV should be kept on. Apparently, the BoV had another person in mind to become President on an interim basis, yet they are now “re-thinking” that. I wonder if their choice saw this mess and decided he wanted no part of it, instead. It will be interesting to hear what happens today.

Anita Kumar of WaPo has tweeted (and Larry Sabato confirmed) that several members of BOV have asked Sullivan to reconsider resignation. I’ve seen nothing in print yet.

sabaray- that would be interesting. Apparently the rally on the Lawn this afternoon will be broadcast by WTJU and they’ll run it on the internet as well. I may tune in to see what is going on. I wonder how far- reaching the whole situation will be, from faculty leaving to BoV members resigning to numbers of students applying for admission this year.

wahoo, will you post the link when it comes on? For some reason, I’m finding this story really fascinating, even though I have no connection at all to UVa (though it is on ds2’s loooong list).

No, there is no direct evidence of which I am aware. I am really just wondering out loud. But it has been documented again and again that better-looking people are more likely to be hired and they are paid more on average. (See the recent Princeton University Press book, “Beauty Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful.”) In the retail sector, better-looking people make more sales, on average, so it makes sense to hire better-looking people. And Dragas is in the business of selling houses.

Someone painted “GREED” on the columns at the Rotunda, and Beta bridge now says, “Strategic Transparency.”

Hey, YDS- this is the link I was given. The school radio station is, not surprisingly, known by the call letters WTJU [91.1FM WTJU](http://wtju.net/)

I can’t believe someone painted anything on the Rotunda. That actually may be the greatest illustration yet as to how deeply the situation has angered people at UVA.

Or that not all hooligans have spelling issues or are uneducated. Yet, hooligans they are!

Had this occured in the Fall season, we probably would see more images of morons starting Occupy UVA movements.

For a campus often defaced with IMP and other groups’ letters a politically/college based protest is not that bad.
