UVA Fall 2018 Transfer Thread

Hey guys! I recently applied for UVA fall 2017 but was rejected. Nevertheless, I’m going to give it another shot for fall 2018. I figured maybe some of you guys would want to discuss/chat regarding transfer related things even prior to the actual application period, so I created this thread. Perhaps premature, but whoooo cares.

I’m applying for fall 2018 junior transfer, I have my application almost ready so that in August I’ll be able to send it in so I get what you’re saying about being premature

My son is transferring in as a second year in Sept. My suggestion is to kill it this semester and be as real as possible with your essays. Don’t tell them what you think they want to hear. His essays this time around were much different than his senior essays. Kept it real and spoke from within. Good luck!! And if you are applying to Mcintire or another professional school make sure you have the classes you need to get in. They also don’t accept many transfers to McIntire. I think there was 26 this year. If you don’t have their required pre-reqs I believe they won’t even consider your application. I think foreign language is the only one you can take over the summer before starting. Good luck

Hey @dukesilverissaxy i remember reading your comments on the 2017 transfer thread. McIntire is super tough to get into, even for students already at the University. Is there anything you think you could’ve done better to up your chances of admission? What advice do you have for transfer applicants this year?

I’m applying from NOVA community college. I’m right with you guys on getting a head start. I’ve been working on different essay versions for weeks now.

Hey guys!

I will be applying as a rising third year from NOVA Community College. I also have been anxiously awaiting my turn to apply as a transfer; here are my stats! Going for CAS Econ.
If you were previously admitted I would love for you to chance me!

Stats:
-GPA: Currently a sad 3.048, however; I have done the math and I will be graduating with a 3.48/4.00. expected GPA is worst case scenario, I can possibly graduate with a 3.6 if I maintain a 4.0
-Cum Laude (With Honors)
-Dean’s list x4 semesters
-1 letter of recommendation

EC’s:
-Founder/President of Finance Club
-Founder/President of Diverse Professionals Association
-Volunteer & Fundraising/Charity
-Bloomberg Professional Certification (Market Concepts)
-Studied abroad in London, Summer 2017 (Financial Markets)

Work Experience:
-Business Analyst Intern @ Tech. Company
-Bloomberg Analytics Boot Camp in London (Summer 2017)

Essay: Strong

Not providing my HS stats as I will have my associate’s completed at the end of the Spring 2018 semester!

That’s it. I hope we all get into the programs we desire! If my cum GPA was 3.7+ I would be applying to McIntire.
Good luck guys.

Hey I actually transferred in after my first year at george mason. So I’m kind of confused. You said your current gpa is a 3.048, but you’ve been on the deans list four times. What gpa constitutes deans list? At mason it was above a 3.5, which would’ve certainly made your overrall gpa much higher. As well I don’t understand how you could be on the dean’s list 4 times seeing as you’ve only completed 2 semesters worth of coursework at the cc. With that said, a 3.48 is definitely on the low side-- a 3.6 would make you much more competitive, though admittedly still lowish comparatively. Your ecs are excellent which I’m sure will sweeten the deal, but I definitely think they want to see more on the academic side of things. If both your hs and college gpa don’t exactly wow them, they’ll probs look at your sat/act to see if you have the chops for it, I’d say you would want to have a 1300 or higher in that regard, or whatever the act equivalent is. Do not apply to mcintire no matter what, that is if you’re totally set on going to uva. Transferring directly into mcintire is incredibly difficult, requiring at least a 3.8 or 3.9, with an excellent hs record, as well as having completed all the pre reqs. Anyways that’s just my 5 cents, best of luck!

Curious on how your transition to UVA was. Feel free to private message me. TY

@sd4198

I was dual enrolled at NOVA my senior year in high school, which means I had two part-time semesters completed by the time I graduated in Spring 2016. Also, I have taken two summer semesters. Both summers I have taken 10+ credits, which qualifies one for Dean’s list if they have greater than a 3.5 for that semester.

To sum it up, I got C’s in my high school DE classes because I was unmotivated and just did not care at that time in my life; obviously things have changed drastically. I was on Dean’s list Summer 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, and now Summer 2017.

Also, I stated a 3.48 is the lowest GPA (worst case scenario, I know my skills and i’ve knocked all the difficult courses out already) I could have once my final semester, Spring 2018, is completed. It is very likely I will have a 3.55-3.64.

Lastly, I am transferring in as a third year transfer, not one year like you. UVA states on their website that they prefer NOVA transfers that have completed their A.S. and that half of their admitted transfer students are these students! As such my HS stats & test scores from back then are not required in my application.

BTW: I’m not stupid enough to apply to McIntire with my GPA; all I said was if I had an ideal GPA for Comm School that I would then apply.

Thank you and congrats on transferring in after one year! Can I PM you for details on the transfer process?

Okay I see. Yeah in that case I would say your chances are probably higher, just because uva weighs your coursework after graduation, more than dual enrollment credits. Idk how you did on your sat but if it’s decent I would def send it in anyways, colleges love to get the most info possible out of an applicant. For example, I wasn’t required to send in my second semester mid term grades at mason, but just felt like they would want to see more of my coursework, despite the fact my grades were actually a bit lower than my first semester grades(3.68 compared to a 3.8 first semester). Are you trying for guaranteed admission? And yeah feel free to pm me with whatever questions.

Congrats, @sd4198 !

Chance me if you have a minute guys  Applying to CAS as a rising third year.

Current school: NOVA community college
Current GPA: 4.0
Completed credits: 21 (18 taken at NOVA, 3 transferred from another institution)
Total at time of application: 57 credits (39 completed, 18 enrolled spring 2018)

ECs:

  • Elected national officer for a student org
  • Guest speaker at my college’s annual Leadership Institute
  • Campus leader for another student org
  • Full-time job in my career field (same area I plan on majoring in at UVA)
  • 3 certifications related to my field
  • Dean’s List 2 semesters
  • Presidential Scholar

4 Letters of recommendation:

  • CEO of my company
  • 2 Professors
  • Student life office, senior staff member

I’m pretty confident I can maintain my 4.0 GPA until at least application time, considering I took the courses I find most challenging (mathematics and science) last year and will be focusing on humanities, social sciences and electives this year. These are my strongest areas, and I’m really excited to take some fun political theory, religion, and philosophy courses. Worst case scenario, I could see it dropping down to a 3.8ish GPA.

My biggest concern is that they’ll notice I completed the bulk of my credits Fall 2017/Spring 2018 and think that I took an excessively easy course load (or slacked off) my first year, then rushed to make up the credits. I encountered some issues with financial aid last year, and could only afford 6 credits Fall 2016 and 12 credits Spring 2017. I’ll be taking 18 credits in both fall 2017 and spring 2018. I might be able to transfer an additional 3 credits to NOVA, which would allow me to earn an Associate’s Degree, but at this time I’m counting on not applying with one. Do you guys think not having an Associate’s Degree and only having 57 credits will hurt me too badly?

You seem like a very strong candidate for CAS Econ, and UVA prefers NOVA students, we fill up 50+% of all transfers accepted! Should be a breeze.

P.S: UVA will allow you to fill any credit gaps-prerequisite courses over the summer before Fall 2018, so you don’t need to worry too much about those 3.

Good luck!

@CommCollTransfer ^^^

@msport Thanks! I’ll be applying to CAS Media Studies, not CAS Econ.

Best of luck! I hope we both get it

Hi everyone! I am in the same situation as everyone else here I see! I just wanna see how my chances look and any advice possibly:

I am currently a student at Lynchburg College in VA and I have (on my schedule, just started yesterday) 25 credits hours so far, and I still am signing up for a few more classes for my spring semester, so ill have around 30+ credits as a sophomore transfer. I am going to really kill it and aim for above a 3.5 GPA.

EC’s:

High school:

  • Varsity tri-athlete for 4 years
  • Vice President of my class
  • Ruri-teen (volunteer work)
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Student section leader

My SAT scores and GPA wasn’t too hot, a 1130 and 3.4, but I was at a 2.8 my sophomore year and really kicked it back into shape.

I currently run XC and Track at Lynchburg, but I don’t know if I will stick around for it, I need to focus more on my academics and really want to make sure I can get into UVA. Also, I am enlisting in the Army Reserves this upcoming week, will this help me any?

Just a couple things left, I am a hispanic, and one thing that I hope helps a lot is I have been interning at a lobbying firm for the past 3 summers at a lobbying firm in Washington, D.C. (Penn Hill Group). I have a recommendation from my academic advisor here and my boss from my internship and am still trying to find one more person. I could get a recommendation from my principal at my high school, or should I find someone else?

Please get back to me, I don’t know if I should even try, I am very anxious!

Thanks for reading, please reply!

@blackpandas101

Hey! I would just reeeaally focus on making sure those 30+ credits hit the required courses listed on the UVA website. While it’s important to have high grades, high grades in the right classes are more valuable. They’ll want to see what you’re made of academically since your HS stats weren’t super competitive.

Extracurriculars are considered in your file, but again, UVA wants to see strong academics so I wouldn’t rely heavily on extracurriculars saving you from an average GPA. Your internship could help! If you’re in-state, I think you have a good shot. I don’t work in admissions or anything but I do know that they’ll want to see you really shine in your essays.

Best of luck!

Hey! I am also applying for CAS as a sophomore transfer. This is my first semester at NVCC and I’m taking 19 credits. For the Spring semester I’m planning on taking 21 credits as I think it’s important that UVA sees as much as college work as they can. After about a month of tests I have a 4.0 right now and I’m pretty darn sure I’ll finish with straight A’s both semesters (I plan on sending the mid semester report to UVA). Just gotta keep working hard at this point (though CC so far is extremely easy) and hold my 4.0. I also have a bunch of AP credits, a 1340 SAT. I didn’t really take life too seriously and I spent majority of my time playing sports so I finished with maybe a (3.4).

is it necessary to have all the course requirements to apply to transfer? if i am only missing the foreign language requirement do i still have a chance?

@finnbd33

this is answered on the UVA transfer FAQ page. UVA’s website says “Most of our transfer students come in missing the foreign language requirement and on average are missing one requirement”

The only negative of missing the foreign language requirement is that you CANNOT apply as a guaranteed admissions transfer

You’ll have the same chance to get in. If your GPA is above a 3.5-3.6 GAA doesn’t even matter. Mind chancing me? I posted my stats on the first page

Mind chancing me? Stats are on the first page if you’re up to it.
