Well hey, guess that’s good news! Can’t complain about beating the average transfer SAT!
BU freshman
GPA: 3.93
High School GPA: 3.5
ACT: 31 (32 superscore)
College: Drama, 2 Newspapers, Political Campaign, Food Services Job
HS: Internship with major marketing firm, Head of Newspaper, Marching Band, Internship w/ Congressman, NHS, Tour Guide, Various volunteerships
Do I have a shot at gov’t major?
Hell yea dude, great shot. I wouldn’t worry at all. Your high school won’t matter that much since your freshman GPA is so high and your ACT is the median score too. I would suppose your ACT is much higher for transfer median though.
absolutely - assuming out of state? Your current GPA and school you are coming from helps also. Good luck!
I have read in a lot of places that if you are not VCCS then your chances are significantly diminished, is this true. If it is then that seems a little unfair to people who went to a four year university and want to transfer.
@gohoos I believe more than 50% accepted are from VCCS. That being said, USC for example is 50% CCC, despite being a Private University. What I am trying to say is that it’s to be expected that more in-state students apply than out of state in the first place. I think the skew is in favor of in-state, but not by as much as it seems.
If you’re a strong student you don’t have to worry about being in/out-of-state
I’m not so sure that’s true. All the out of state applicants from 2017 and 2016 threads had really high GPA’s. In-state whether it’s CC/4 year schools, they have a much easier time getting in. The only reason I’m saying that he has a good chance is because of his 3.93 and his high ACT.
Mcintire is a whole different story. Even VCCS kids have an extremely tough time getting in, let alone OOS Mcintire applicants. There’s a stat on the blog that shares that apparently they take <10 external Mcintire applicants which in my opinion is absurd.
@uvact123 Damn I did not know that. I think that’s absurd too. I think the whole in-state / out-of-state thing is stupid to begin with. For example, I am technically out of state everywhere, because I grew up in Germany. Nevertheless, I can’t apply as an international (which would give me higher chances I think?), because I am a dual-citizen.
I would say you having a unique background would make you a more competitive candidate. There’s also not that many people applying external Mcintire either. Your chances still I think aren’t as bad as you think
I’m a little confused-- what is it with the 24 credit minimum? Does that mean I can’t apply as I’ve only completed one semester of college so far? Or is it just a preference and not a requirement.
I believe it means 24 credits by the time you start.
Please let me know if you think I even have a chance (brutal honestly would be appreciated)
My stats:
School: US News top 100
Year: rising sophomore
Major: Mechanical engineering
Virginia resident (in-state)
HS GPA: 3.99 weighted from a very competitive public STEM school
SAT: 1500 superscored (new)
College GPA: 4.0 first semester
Hoping for a 4.0 second semester as well
ECs:
Society of Women Engineers
Member of my school’s honors college
Leadership development program within the college of engineering
On a research team lead by a physics professor to promote stem to kids at local high schools
Volunteered to do math tutoring for calculus 2 first semester
Hoping to join another club this semester
High school ECs involve captaining a varsity sport for 2 years, working as a camp counselor at a stem camp, and doing a leadership program with a local congresswoman
Hooks: Female in engineering, presidents list my first semester of college, not much else
Strengths (I think): college GPA, ECs
Weaknesses: High school GPA, test scores
Good chance. I’ve seen way worse high school stats and test scores get in (like 3.3 W HS GPA and <1400 SAT). What’s important is that you get a good GPA your 2nd semester also
Does anyone know how important esays and rec letters are to UVA?
Important enough to where recommendation letters are not even required at all. I am still submitting all 3 because I got to know my professors over the semester and I’m sure they’re writing me some bomb recs. As for essays, I’m pretty sure they’re just looking to know more about the applicant and give the applicants a chance to give them a compelling reason to why they want to go to UVA.
All,
I am currently First year and am looking to transfer. I am currently enrolled at a local Virginia school, and am applying to the CAS as a Psychology major.
Stats:
HS GPA: 3.6 (Took all IB classes and received IB Diploma)
First Semester College GPA: 3.813
HS EC’s:
Made a club in High School (I am still involved with this club even though I have already graduated)
Had an Internship with a Consulting Company
Youth Soccer Coach
Youth Lacrosse coach
Volunteer at a homeless shelter (Since 2009)
College EC’s
Member of Science Club
Member of Hispanic Club
Member of the Honor Society
Member of the Dean’s List
Member of the Honor’s College
Presidential Scholarship Recipient
Work Experience:
Have been working 20 hours a week since the start of my Senior year in HS.
I have already gotten 2 recommendations from my professors. While I have not been able to read them, they both really liked me, so I know that they are great.
I know that my midterm grades are very important, but what do you all think about my chances?
SAT score? Good chance for you if your SAT score is solid for transfering (atleast >1350). I know many people with your stats who have ended up getting in, but their midterm reports were also very good (3.7+). Good chance honestly. HS GPA won’t really matter since you’re doing so well in 2 semesters (I’m assuming your 2nd semester is good too) and if you have a good SAT score. You can chance me too if you feel like it.
1st semester NVCC: 4.0 GPA w/ 14 credits
2nd semester NVCC: 4.0 GPA w/ 20 credits (I’m taking accelerated classes so grades will be finalized very soon)
HS GPA: 3.0-3.3 (sucks I know)
SAT score: 1460 superscored
Decent HS EC’s
@acceptancewoohoo Other than answering the transfer prompt, I would use the essay section to communicate information they can’t gather from the rest of the application (i.e. if you took a light load one semester, stuff like that)
Hello everyone- I am looking to transfer to UVA from a liberal arts college in MA. I have a question- is act/sat optional for transfer students? I know on the website it says “n/a” about sat/act but the common app says that it is always required. Thanks!
