UVA Financial Aid Nightmare

Dear Dean J,

RE: Revision made by UVA to my daughter's FAFSA by UVA with a professional lock put on her account.
U.Va. Student System ID: 2270813

A change was made on 4/13/2011 by a financial aid officer at UVA to my daughter's FAFSA line 92i which added $6,589 to our family income causing or EFC to increase by $2880.

According to the explanation we received from the UVA financial aid office when I called on Thursday 4/14/2011, the correction was made up by the $800 making work pay credit, $2894 from line 12d of husband's schedule k and $2895 from line 12d of my schedule k. Our personal 1040 return includes the $800 on line 63 and the $5789 (made up of our schedule K $2895 and $2894, respectively) is included in the ($12,264 and $12,264 on line 1 of our respective schedule K returns ) which combines to make up the $24,528 on 17 of our 1040 personal return. FSAIC has gone through all of our income tax returns, and can see the mistake that was made but cannot correct it because of the professional lock placed on the document by UVA.

The change is now impacting financial aid awards from other colleges, including UC Berkeley who reduced their financial aid award on Friday 4/15/2011. I have now spent 5 days trying to get UVA to correct the mistake made on my daughter's FAFSA. I was told on Thursday 4/14/2011 that the FAFSA correction would be made on Monday as FAFSA corrections could not be made on a Friday. I spoke with FSAIC this morning and no correction had been submitted by UVA. I was told by UVA financial aid on Monday that changes are sent by UVA to FSAIC on Mondays and Tuesdays and the corrected would be submitted then. It is now Wednesday and I have just spoken with Alex at FSAIC who informed me that UVA has not made any change to my daughter’s FAFSA since 4/13/2011 when they made the mistake. He told me that UVA can go online and correct the mistake in the same way that they went online and made the erroneous correction in the first place, it is that simple.

Incidentally, UVA corrected and increased my daughter's UVA financial aid award based on correcting their FAFSA error, without us even requesting an appeal of my daughter’s financial aid award from UVA. Yet UVA financial aid seems unwilling to correct the problem with my daughter's FAFSA which we have requested they corrected urgently.

My daughter is now faced with making a college selection by May 1st without accurate financial aid packages from all the colleges through no fault of our own.

Are we to assume that UVA financial aid is willing to contribute the $2880 additional EFC to my daughters choice of college since UVA financial aid is not willing to correct the mistake they made to my daughter’s FAFSA?
