UVA: First-semester pre-med?

As I’ve been trying to organize my first semester course schedule at UVA, I’ve realized that I don’t really know what I’m doing. I’ve checked UVA’s pre-health advising website for the most common pre-requisites (https://career.virginia.edu/gpsa/pre-health/careers/medicine/requirements-and-involvement-medicine) but I’m still not sure what kind of classes to start with.
Although I’m not 100% sure, I’m leaning towards a philosophy major. However, I again don’t know how to fit that into a first semester course load.
I’ve placed out of the first writing requirement, so I don’t have to take a writing course first semester even though I haven’t entirely ruled it out. Also I’ve placed out of the language requirement.
I don’t know whether I should take Introductory College Chemistry, Introduction to Biology with Laboratory: Cell Biology & Genetics, or a physics class. I have taken both AP Bio (4) and AP Physics 1 (3) although I didn’t score high enough to place out, if that’s of any relevance. The only one thing I know I want to take first semester is Calculus. After a hard science class (which one yet I do not know) and calculus, I imagine I should take something like psychology or sociology and perhaps something philosophy related?
Anyway, I don’t really know what I’m doing and I would really really appreciate any advice. Thank you

This is what your faculty and student advisors AT UVA are for. They will be able to answer questions regarding being a pre-med at UVA way better than the people on here.

I haven’t yet been assigned a faculty/student advisor so I figured it must be too early to try to contact them. I guess I shall try to find someone to speak to!

Understand that applying to med school is a year long process. With that in mind, your schedule could depend on whether you try to be a “traditional” applicant meaning you plan to apply at end of third year with intent to graduate, then start med school. Or do you plan on taking things a little slower, apply at end of senior year with intent on taking gap year, then starting med school. Just something to think about when you do talk to advisor. Good luck.

If you’ve got nothing UVA specific to go on and really want to start thinking about it. Here are sample schedules at Brown (https://www.brown.edu/academics/college/advising/health-careers/sites/brown.edu.academics.college.advising.health-careers/files/uploads/Sample%20Time%20Line%20for%20Health%20Careers%20or%20Pre-Med%20Students.pdf). Standard courseload at Brown is 4 classes, so in most semesters the pre-health advisor is saying the other 2 courses are up to you/your major. You will also have to consider GEs. The Brown course catalogue is here: http://brown.mochacourses.com/mocha/main.jsp you can look up the classes suggested by the HCO and see how they compare to the listings at UVA. For example CHEM0330 (http://brown.mochacourses.com/mocha/search.action?courseNumber=CHEM0330&semesters=25&view=details) will probably correspond to UVA’s gen chem 2.
