I personally greatly enjoyed the Rush Process, which was immensely fun. I'd recommend everyone (even if you don't want to pledge) to go through the rush process. You get a great opportunity to learn the greek system and lot of fun (strippers, NBA, NHL games, jello-wrestling, mixers) for the 25 buck you pay.

tenniscraze probably got his ass balled at every house he went to - which is why he's so ****ed off.

he didn't rush.

jags86, did you participate in the past rush? or are u an upperclassman?

upperclassmen - and did i ever participate in rush...gawd - rush sucks

my ass balled in what, jags? Haha. I didn't even rush despite the fact that so many brothers tried getting me to do it. If I had my way, UVA shouldn't seem so southern with all this sororitute culture. It should be like Stanford - UVA sor. girls are too pretentious.

What's wrong with southern culture? Do you have a problem with it? Can you not tolerate it? It's always been a part of UVA, and while it's not dominant, it's noticeable. You should work harder to tolerate other cultures and ways of life.

edit: The sorority girls aren't pretentious. They're hot. Maybe you're just timid?

smoking hot*

They are hot, but I would have to agree more with tenniskraze on that point in that they are pretentious. But the frat system shouldn't die definitely. Where else would the hundreds of drunk first years go without it?

Greetings from London!

I think it depends on the sorority. There are definitely snooty ones, and there are down-to-earth ones. Just like I wouldn't say all Asians or Latinos are like such-and-such, I wouldn't clump all frats/sororities into one category either.

Matt, I'm going to London for Spring break :D

Yo, are you stalking me? (Just kidding.) When is your Spring Break?

This question is for those who are UVa students and have joined fraternities. In general, how intense is the pledge process? I'm going to be an incoming 2nd year transfer student this fall and I have interest in joining a fraternity. However, I'm also planning on applying to the Comm School this year, so I need to keep my grades up as I'm starting this year with a clean slate (GPAs don't transfer over). How hard is it to pledge and maintain a good GPA - 3.7+...
Also, does anyone know anything about the fall rush period? I believe there is one designated for upperclassmen and transfer students. Thanks, any input would be appreciated

mmmmm, it all depends on the house you pledge.

Some houses have intense and tough pledging process that is physically and emotionally exhausting.

Some houses have very relaxed pledging process.

Some are in between.

What Untitled said. I pledged a very chill frat and maintained a wonderful GPA while a hallmate suffered dramatically while pledging another one. Fraternities are as different as people.

well said. (the last sentence)

I pledged a very chill fraternity but my GPA dropped by 0.5 because I didn't give a damn about school. :(

Hey, how's the Zebe chapter at UVA nowadays?

There are 15 chapters at UVa, and each has its own reputation and generalization...

It is generally assumed that the top two, reigning sororities are Kappa (KKG) and Theta (KAT). These consist of the richest girls, usually attractive (but certainly not always!). Kappas usually come from private schools in the Virginia area (so many Richmond girls) or farther south. Thetas are generally from the North, or further west. All are extremely well dressed and coifed and more interested in going out every night than studying...

After those two, there are three others most often included in the "top tier." These are Pi Phi, Tridelt and DG. Of those three, Pi Phis are known as almost goodie goodie (there is a very apparent divide in their membership, as a good number of them are referred to as the 'God Squad,' and do not drink), Tridelts are a bit crazier, considered fun and wild, if not a bit over the top and perhaps "fast." Tridelts are more often from the North, many from New York, Connecticut or New Jersey. DGs are overwhelmingly blonde, beautiful, but not overwhelmingly smart.

If you were to pledge one of those 5 sororities, you would most likely be set for being let into the "cool parties" for the rest of your college life. These sororities mix with the best frats (DKE and ZTE usually only with Kappa and Theta, but also The Hall, ELMO, KA, PIKA and Chi Phi) and most girls are considered HOT.

After those five, there are a few "second tier," considered acceptable to good, but can't crack the top five. These are, in approximate order, Alpha Phi (cute, blonde, boring girls), DZ (fun and perhaps a bit easy...) and then Chi O (overwhelmingly involved, boring but pretty) and KD (cute, subdued, not seen out as much).

After that are the sororities that exist to make the other ones look good. These are AChiO (almost but not quite...), Sigma Kappa, ZTA (a lot of Asians), Tri Sig, ADPi and Gamma Phi Beta.......

Hope this helps.

Thanks Hoogal. That was probably the funniest post I have read in months!

Yay! I'm in a top tier sorority!! It was very funny Hoogal--and truthful!

Another thing I love about UVA! Very few things have changed there since I started in 1980--except DGs have come a long way to be included as a top tier!
