UVA grants and net price calculator...error?

Ran my family info through the UVA calculator earlier today... it said I would receive almost full tuition in gift aid - my total per year is estimated at about $4000. The aid is all grant - the calculator doesn't ask for academic info - I'm a 33 ACT, top 10% in my class, so do I stand a chance at academic scholarships - , categorized by the Pell Grant (which other colleges say I don't qualify for?) and by just "Grants." My family's middle class, out-of-state, and at most colleges I don't get much of anything in grant gift aid. I'm not complaining, because it drops a $50K+ tuition down to something I can easily afford, but there has to be an error somewhere. Or am I just confused on the grants at this university?

UVA meets 100% of UVA-determined need for both in-state & OOS students. The estimate’s correct, unless you entered some of your info incorrectly.

UVA meets need by including loans in the FA package. What is your family income?

Pell grants are based on income, not academics. You either qualify or you don’t. If you get a Pell grant, UVa will take that off of the grants it gives you, so you won’t get double.

I would be very surprised if you got all grants to “meet need”. UVA includes loans, so there should be about $5500 - 6500 in fed loans…and likely $2k in work study.

Most middle class families do not qualify for Pell grants – might want to double check your entries.

Didn’t UVA increase the income threshold for the no loan financial aid? I thought some students still got no loan aid…but I could be wrong. And the income threshold is much lower than it used to be.

To the OP…Re: Pell Grant. The Pell eligibility is based on your FAFSA EFC. If you qualify for the Pell at one college, you should qualify at every college. It sounds like something wasn’t entered correctly. How much Pell Grant money did you remove per the UVA net price calculator? Your family income would need to be very low for a full Pell Grant.

Doesn’t UVA require the FAFSA and the CSS Profile to be filled out? The Board of Visitors had voted to end the no loan policy for low income students in 2013 – did they reverse that decision? Think the loans was capped at $14,000 for in-state students and $28,000 for out-of-staters.

Thank you MT. I was t sure what had happened to that no loan policy. And yes, I believe UVA uses both the FAFSA and the Profile.
