Title. I was admitted to both UVA and UT (Physics major).
I got into UVA Echols and College Science Scholars, and was denied from UT Dean’s Scholars. I am a Texas resident–Should I choose UVA for its honors program, or UT for in-state tuition?
You should choose the school that:
-
your parents can afford - have you talked to them about budget? - UVA is very pricey. Don’t forget, with physics you will have more schooling after.
-
The vibe you want - huge school/city vs. smaller school/city
The Honors thing is often marketing; that wouldn’t sway me. You’ll get a fine education at either.
Is UVA affordable? Have you visited? Do some research. Look at UVA threads on CC. Do your due diligence.
UT Austin?
Likely UT-Austin. They have a program called Dean’s Scholars.
I’d pick UT(A) over UVA (and I love UVA) any day. Even at the same coast.
S18 was offered Echols and loved UVA. He thought the option to get out of all GEs and study what he wanted was particularly interesting. But in the end head over heart led him to stay instate (UCLA), which was much cheaper, and he’s never looked back. He’s also had all the same opportunities (eg DC internship) that would have been available at UVA (being close to DC and national politics was his reason for applying in the first place)
This is a decision you need to make with your parents. Can your family afford UVA with no loans, no hardship? If so, you can then weigh the benefits of the UVA Honors program, the cost savings at UT (especially if you are considering grad school), the colleges sizes/locations etc.
Both are fantastic options. Congrats.
