So, what are my chances?? I'm looking at Johns Hopkins, UVA, Willaim & Mary, Columbia, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Tech, and BU

Hopkins: Match
UVa: Match
W & M: Unsure
Columbia: Reach
Harvard: Reach (take into account that columbia and harvard are reaches for virtually everbody)
Vanderbilt: Safety
Auburn: Safety
Tech: Safety
BU: Safety/Match

LizzieE,
Do not pay attention to Beefs's post. His analysis of your chances is completely wrong (no offense beefs). I find it hard to believe that he believes Vanderbilt is a safety. He has no idea what he is talking about. Since when are Vanderbilt and Auburn on the same level (Vandy's middle SAT for class of 2010: 1280-1470, their Acceptance rate: 30-40%, while Auburn's is something like 1050-1230 and 70-80 %, respectively). You are not a URM, so, with your stats, all the top 20 schools you're applying to are slight reaches to reaches.

After reading your post, it is evident that you have challenged yourself significantly in your h.s. career, in terms of the courses you have taken and the various ECs you have to your name. What is not so lucid, in my opinion, is where your passions lie. Your ECs show involvement in many areas, but it seems that you merely tried to participate in a plethora of disconnected activities. The schools you are applying to (esp. Hopkins, Columbia, Harvard) want to see areas of concentration. They want to see internships, study abroad, starting your own chapter of a service organization in your community, etc... Your SAT Is and IIs are not anything exceptional, so it is reasonable to infer that your college adcoms will be scrutinizing your ECs to make up for a lack of outstanding test scores.

It would be helpful to have your class rank and it would also be helpful if you would break down your SAT I into Math, CR, and Writing so we can gauge just how the adcoms will see your app. This will give us a better idea of what you excel at and where your strengths lie. As a result CCers can give you a better idea of your chances.

Hopkins: Reach
UVA: Match (In state)
W and M: High match (in state)
Columbia: Reach
Harvard: No shot
Vanderbilt: Slight reach-Reach
Auburn: Safety
Tech: Safety
BU: Match-High match

gchris07 -- My class doesn't rank, but I know I'm tied for #1. also, as for interests, I'm involved in a lot of Journalism/English related things. However, i view high school as a time to search and try new things. Also, I have legacy at Harvard and UVA.

I disagree with gchris07. I believe he's a little too hard on your chances and doesn't value your 4.0 GPA and 2110 enough but pays too much attention to the EC's. Your EC's will not make or break you except for Top 20 schools.

Hopkins: Slight Reach
UVA: Match (In state)
W and M: Match / Safe Match (in state)
Columbia: Reach
Harvard: Reach
Vanderbilt: Match / Safe Match
Auburn: Safety
Tech: Safety
BU: Match / Safe Match

thanks zkevin - but i was wondering, what really is wrong with my ECs? I have a bunch of leadership positions and I dedicate tons of time to newspaper.

I will also have an excellent rec from my newspaper advisor.

Your EC aren't "good". They are merely average, which is the problem. You need "stellar/good" EC for the really competitive schools. From what you indicated I noted 1 officer position (President - NHS). I don't believe Marketing Manager and Managing Editor are officer positions, but perhaps I am wrong here. They just don't sound like it, they sound more like a job you do as opposed to an actual leadership position (President, VP, Treasurer, etc.). If they are then your EC is a little better then I thought and I might change John Hopkins to a Match / Slight Reach instead of a slight reach. The other problem about your EC is that there are no achievements that stand out (maybe except publishing in local new s...but I'm not sure how hard that is cause I don't write at all :P).

ok, that helps. Managing Editor is actually a huge leadership position. I mean, it's a job I do on the newspaper staff, but I'm also basically in charge of our 30+ person staff along with the editor-in-chief. As for Marketing Manager, that is completely volunteer work. Although it may not be a typical leadership position, it helps yield a huge chunk ok the company's profit. I'm not trying to talk up my ECs or anything, I just want to get an accurate indication of my chances! Thanks so much zkevin!

IMO, any kind of job with a school newspaper where editor is in the job title is a leadership position. Editors lead, instruct, and manage those beneath them, do they not? I guess this could depend on the size/level of the publication.

I'm baised though, becaues i'm the editor-in-chief of my school paper.

Definitely a match for UVA, as you are an in-stater.

"I disagree with gchris07. I believe he's a little too hard on your chances and doesn't value your 4.0 GPA and 2110 enough but pays too much attention to the EC's. Your EC's will not make or break you except for Top 20 schools."

i think gchris's statements on vanderbilt at least arn't really off. vanderbilt is hard to get into...and a 1380 isn't exactly off the charts. Remember, if your school doesn't rank, vanderbilt won't know you're no. 1 in your class. lots of kids of 4.something GPAs who apply to vanderbilt. It most definately isn't a shoe in or safe bet, but I would say you have a good shot getting in - although don't be overconfident.

Top 20 schools are (usually) not matches for anyone. The OP's ECs are good, and she shows passion for journalism. SAT scores are below avg for JHU (1440/2160), so it is a reach. Vandy is a slight reach, but I say good shot. Harvard and Columbia seem very unlikely with those SATs. Rest are matches or safeties.
