UVA Housing 2012

hazel, I'm still jealous about your location at woodrow!

Meh, I'd rather be on the Corner. I don't really mind the walk, you can usually just walk to Alderman and catch a bus there, or cut though the Med School, and take the trolley back to the 14th St stop right by the Med School. The whole bus-finder-GPS-thingie will be really helpful this year. Would've been super-nice last year in Lambeth, but whatever, better late than never.

I'd love to hear from a 1st year - ideally not a transfer or international student - but a "regular" in-coming first year who got placed in hereford in 2007 when one of the dorms was all first years, and what their experience was like. the U.Va. housing people are saying that there are not maintaining a waiting list and will not make any room assignment changes prior to the start of the school year. at that point, a week or two into the year, the student can go thru the regular procedures to request a move (which may or may not be granted). they are 150-200 overbooked at this point. by the way, by 2011, all the Hereford buildings will be 1st years. so, does hereford have the same number of intramural teams, for instance, as alderman and mccormick? what else worked for the 1st years not to feel so socially (not to mention physically) isolated?

I got the single room in Hereford and cost me $1100 more, too expensive. Do you think I can switch to the single in McCormick? Should I call the housing department?

Most likely, you won't be switched. As the previous poster said before you, they aren't making changes until the start of school.
Did you request a single? Or just got stuck in a single?

I requested single and expected will be in McCormick. Most of the classes that I plan to take will be either in the Chemistry or Bio building. Is Hereford quite far from these buildings?

It was a bad move to request a single and expect McCormick. There's like, 1-2 singles per floor per building, so 4 per building, max. That means only about 30 singles in McCormick entirely. You basically got what you asked for: a single.
Hereford is probably a mile from central grounds, but I walked once from Gooch/Dillard to grounds so I may be a bit off. Either way, it's a long walk. The bus system is pretty good though, and there's always the option of a bike.
As for your chances of switching, I'm not sure if they're going to give preference to those randomly placed in Hereford over those who requested singles, or not. I would add your name to the waiting list and see, though. However, don't expect to get a single in McCormick. If you really want a single, you might have to stay put.

Is Hereford really that far from everything? Is it safe?

Only 3 of the hereford buildings are first years only (Malone, Weedon, Whyburn). The other 3 buildings are for upperclassmen (Johnson, Norris, Vaughan).

I live in Brown and I have to park my car 2/3 mile away. Everything at UVA is "far" but there are buses and you'll get your walking legs after a week. :)

oh oops sorry i thought you said "[class of] 2011: all the hereford buildings are first years" not "by 2011...". it's because they're rebuilding all of the new dorms and need a place to put all of the first years while they do that.

I think it was a bit unethical not to make it clear on the housing application that if you requested a single, you'd be put in Hereford. Obviously they didn't want to make that clear as they wouldn't have been able to fill Hereford.

I requested a single and was placed in mccormick. though what mechwahoo said is unsettling.

are there any other opinions about the singles in mccormick vs the singles in hereford

well it's not that, they put people who didn't request hereford there, so they would have been able to fill it regardless. but housing is notorious for those kinds of things honestly... this year in brown they lost EVERYONE'S roommate requests AND rooming preferences so ended up moving people over one or two rooms and mixing up everyone's roommates. it was AWFUL.

astraya: the singles in mccormick are the size of a closet, probably once they were closets. your ceiling slopes over half of your room. one of my best friends had a single in mccormick.

i guess i should have said "they wouldn't have been able to fill Hereford with people who requested that location" rather than "they wouldn't have been able to fill Hereford". yeah, they'll fill it however they see fit for sure. it seems the housing division's stance is that, if you requested a single, you requested hereford as, if you passed their test of pouring over the housing materials prior to completing the application process, you would have learned that a single request would almost guarantee a room in Hereford as they're 80% single. so, their assumption is that requesting a single meant being ok with hereford which is clearly not the case for many students.

at least there's enough housing on grounds for everyone. my cousin just graduated from stanford and one year she told me they had to house students in hotels nearby because they didn't have enough rooms for everyone.

No offense to the singles-people, but the housing info is pretty clear on what type of housing/location you'll get if you request a single. It says that there are 30 singles in McCormick (remember, girls on top two floors, boys on bottom two, so girls have an even lesser chance since the rooms are under the stairs...which it states clearly too). That is a mighty small number. However, 80% of Hereford is singles. Now, since you're new wahoos, you must be very intelligent and can think things through. I assume that seeing 30 rooms/probably 10% versus 80%, you would know that you have a much, much higher chance of being part of the 80% (Hereford).
I know you probably think it sucks right now, but there is a bright side. First, Hereford people are going to be in wayy better shape. Second, since 80% of Hereford are singles, it will probably be more social rather than just roommates talking amongst themselves. Third, there is always the chance to move out. It will be a different first year experience, but an experience nontheless. Just be glad you get that chance ;)

Other than the location, the Hereford rooms aren't bad. It's just that the same architect who designed Hereford probably designed half of the county jails as well. Interior is fine, but exterior leaves much to be desired.

Hereford is fairly close to O-Hill and the aquatic center and you're close to Scott Stadium. The frat houses are far away, though, so make sure you hit the restroom before walking back to the dorm.

Meh, interior is the one I would care most about.

I wouldn't mind living in an underground bunker actually, if the interior was paradise. ;)

I believe first years that live in hereford have double rooms. Upperclassmen have the singles. The only single rooms for first years I have heard of are in old dorms and in the glorious Brown College.

definitely not true. malone and weedon are completely first years and there are definitely singles there.

also, brown does not have any singles. every room is a double.
