There has been a lot of talk about getting in, learning, and socializing at UVA. No one has mentioned anything much about living there. What are the dorms to be in? Are some better than others? Cheaper? Nicer? More fun?

I would also like to hear what you all have to say about housing at UVA. My daughter will hopefully be going and we would like to hear about dorms, etc. I have checked the housing site and McCormick looks nice and from what I understand, you have to apply to get in to the residence colleges. Also, if you do apply and get in to one of the residential colleges it appeared that you would have a room to yourself? I am not sure that my daughter would like that to begin with....any info would be appreciated!

Here's a link to a previous discussion that goes into detail about UVa Student Housing.

Here's another thread that discusses upperclassman housing and the differences between Brown College on Monroe Hill vs. the IRC (International Residential College).

Thanks Globalist! You are always a big help to all!

Most first years live on Alderman (New Dorms) or McCormick (Old). McCormick is right on central grounds and is ideally located for most classes. Those dorms are hall style. Alderman (except Woody and Cauthen, which are hall) is suite style. It is somewhat farther, but most of these dorms are right on top of one of the dining hall. Some of the dorms on Alderman do get a little farther away from things. Woody and Cauthen are special dorms with AC that are pretty much exclusively given to people with allergies. I lived in Woody myself and loved it. They also have elevators. If you send in a doctor's note for allergies, asthma, etc. you will most likely get Woody/Cauthen. The other dorm with AC is Hereford. Hereford has single rooms and is generally unpopular because it is very far away from everything. Close to the Runk dining hall, but it's a fair walk to central grounds. Oh, and then there's Brown but I confess I don't know a whole lot about that. It does have the best location, right on the main campus. That's a special application process... I believe first years can live there.
