Looks like this will be an annual increase over the next 5 years.

ah well... whats $580 added to $10K anyway? ;)

An increase of $600 a year over five years adds up to a 50% increase in tuition. In five years UVa's tuition alone will be close to $10,000 a year. This will make getting a college education more and more difficult for the poor.

Of course, none of that matters to you if Mommy and Daddy are payin'.

heck no, i have to pay for college myself. but, what is another $600 added onto a $10k?

Stumper, I resent that comment. If one is truly too poor to attend college, or if one can not afford this increase, the government will pick up the tab. Do not talk badly about those whose parents were smart enough to plan, or who are financially stable.

damn if you do, damned if you don't.

if you are poor, you can get money (aka, do nothing). if you are rich, you are fine. if you are middle class, you have to pay and hold back on buying other things.

see, it doesn't make sense.

and yes, I'm not poor at all... but my parents have promptly said only food and clothing will be paid for -> i will have to pay for my own tuition...

amnesia, I know $600 seems small, but it's the first increase of 5yr annual tuition hike, resulting in roughly a 50% increase in tuition.

If you're an incoming 1st yr, you can expect to pay $8,980 during your final year. Since you have to pay for your own education, you'll be cursing these increases when you're paying your monthly student loans.

Too bad whiteguy. I resent your resentment. Your ignorant comments show how out of touch you really are. The government never picks up the entire tab. The maximum Pell grant is $4150. That's it. That leaves roughly a $20,000+ student loan for tuition alone.

Perhaps you only call them Mama and Papa?

Haha, calm down. I could care less about this topic. My parents are just glad I didn't choose a private college, which brings me to my point: one does not need to focus on these increases; UVa is an awesome buy.

This increase doesn't surprise me at all. UVa has already announced that they will increase tuition by 10% each year for the next 5 years.

Washington and Lee, the other school I looked at, is up to $37,000. So, I can't complain about UVa.

$600 is not bad at all considering the level of education youre getting at UVA. UVA is ranked 11th on US News' "Great Deals at Great Schools" List, and that is looking at the out of state tuition costs; not to mention the extreme good buy that you are getting if youre an instate.
UVA's price tag is on the cheaper end compare to the other top 25 schools in the US. Besides the problem is not UVA trying to make more money, lol. Its that Government spending on educational programs has decrease and the government has increased spending on other issues (Iraq, Defense, TAX CUTS) and the money has to come from somewhere.

I believe the increase is just fine in my mind.

I guess comparing a private university to a public one makes sense??? What did you score on the SAT?

Doesn't anyone here see it as a 50% hike in tuition? From $6,000 to $9,000 a year.

No, some of us don't care about money; the education is worth it.

Actually, it's more than 50%. A compounded increase of 10% each year over 5 years gives a total increase of about 60%. It is a lot. But relatively speaking, most other colleges will also be increasing their fees at about the same rate, especially private ones. So in the end, UVa will still be a good deal. I hope.
