Does anyone know if the University of Virginia's school of Nursing admission requirements are higher than the UVA school averages? I know it is highly competitive because of the size of the program. My daughter has an above average chance of getting into UVA based upon peer admissions but she is applying to UVA's School of Nursing.

Any incite would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hello @jeranimal
my D is a high school senior & got into UVA School of Nursing. It is very competitive & hard to get in. That’s just our personal opinion.
I don’t know the actual admission statistics break down for out-of-state & in-state students. We went to the Days on the Lawn a couple of weeks ago & they said it is very hard to get in.
They will have 67 - 68 students for the incoming class !
Yep, 67 - 68.
Total.
1st year.

They keep the class size to 88 students. They will take in some transfer in 2nd yr ( aprx 18 transfer students, this will vary from yr to yr )

The CDS (common data set) from previous years showed the total # of applicants & # of offers made in the previous years. Now, don’t quote me here, ok? I think the CDS showed a range of aprx ~18% to 20% ( give or take a bit ) admit rate for school of nursing.

The school of nursing offers information sessions on various Saturday. We went to one of those back in November & it was really nice. I encourage you to sign up & attend if you have a chance. We get to tour the nursing building, got some info from the admission staff & there was a student panel etc.

There is a Nursing sub forum here in CC, you may like to take a look, there are lots of nursing info there. There are 2 others parents who posted there said their D didn’t submit any SAT II subject tests & got in to UVA nursing.
My D submitted 2 SAT II. Subject tests are optional according to UVA website but my D took them anyway.

FlowerMom, thanks for the insight. How did your daughter’s GPA and test scores compare to the other admitted UVA students?

My daughter is in-state (northern virginia ) and has a weighted GPA of 4.42, has taken 5 AP courses with 5 more planned for next year, and an ACT score of 32. She’s active in SCA, NHS, and other school activities, plus she works part time after school, nannies in the summer, and also volunteers at Loudoun Hospital.

Interested to see what you think her chances are. Thanks!

Hi @jeranimal
I have no idea how my D’s GPA & test scores compared to other admitted nursing students. UVA DeanJ has a wonderful admission blog post & the admiss. stats are for university overall.
I don’t know anything at all about those who got in ( diversity or not ? ). I would LOVE to know…since I have an older D who will be applying to the Master program in Oct
so I love to know what they look for.

She has really good grades, good SAT scores, leadership skills etc. She said she wrote a really good essay(s). She is a Full IB Diploma student, so all the classes are IB & the rest are APs…with the exception of electives such as Band & a couple other classes. I think her classes are considered to be "most demanding / most rigorous ".

I think your D has a chance. I don’t know how many AP other students in her HS take. The GC guidance counselor will be able to tell you if her classes are considered " most demanding " at her school. They have to check that off in the official transcript they send in to the college.

Deposited paid. T-shirts bought. Roommate chosen. She is ready to attend UVA !

definitely apply, she will love it there.
Her grades & test scores are really high.

Most ( majority) of the clinical will be at UVA hospital, which is directly across the street from the nursing building. There is a cover " walkway " that connects both building so the students can walk to the hospital w/out walking across the streets. The nursing students also have their own chemistry & bio classes, aprx 70 students each. To me that is a big plus ! Those classes are supposed to be hard & having a small class size just for the nursing students are fantastic to me. They don’t take the chem & bio classes with the rest of the UVA students.

They will start their 1st clinical in the 2nd year ( spring semester ).

Yes, having 70 students in your first year chem class is much better than the 500 that my son had at UVa.

At very selective universities, in the old days, nursing used to be the easiest program for admittances. Now, my impression is that nursing is about average for admissions difficulty at universities like UVa, Penn, Georgetown, etc. I haven’t seen stats for UVa. At moderately selective (such as U. Del) and less selective universities, nursing is now usually one of the most difficult programs for admission.

UVa’s nursing program does have an excellent reputation, it is one of the rare nursing program in the southeast that does direct admission from high school. That is a major attraction for many applicants, because they don’t need to take their chances on a competitive admission after 2 years of college, which is the case at most other universities in the region.

I went to an alumni thing at the beginning of last year and they gave a statistics thing that had the average sat for each school at UVA. Nursing was the lowest average. I don’t know if that gives any insight. From the people I know who got into the program, I think your child has a good chance
