UVA or NYU for economics?

please please help me choose!!!

Which school has a better reputation?
Which school has a better ECON related program?
(disregard the tuition part and the campus)
The thing is that I might want to study business later, so i probably want to apply for Stern if i'm going to NYU. But McIntire is ranked very high!!

Now the problem is that UVA has a more friendly atmosphere, while NYU has a better location for jobs.
UVA has a higher ranking, while NYU's reputation is probably higher.
Academically which one should I choose?

I am stuffed here!! Thanx a loooot!

should not matter. if you have what it takes, you'll succeed anywhere. If you don't, no reputation can save you.

The answer you will get in this forum will be biased. (Check the forum title if you don't believe me.) On that note, UVa. It has an excellent undergrad business program if you find that econ (the mathematics based one) isn't for you. It's the 2nd best in the country.

P.S. There's a place for these types of questions. And the thread title is ON THE FIRST PAGE. Look before you post.

I was in a similar situation. I ultimately chose UVA because it'll be cheaper and I think it'll be better for what I want to study (history), but NYU has a lot of great internship opportunities and you can't beat the fact that you can get Wall Street experience.

Don't pick based on departmental prestige at the undergraduate level. Pick on overall reputation, campus life, etc. NYU and UVA are very different schools with very different atmospheres. Personally, I think a school like UVa with a very defined and cohesive campus and school identity is better for an undergraduate education than one that is spread out through a city, lacks significant history and is tremendously expensive. UVa is, in general, considered to be stronger at the undergraduate level and has excellent recruiting. You can do well at either one, but I think you'd be better off going to UVa as an undergraduate and then perhaps going to NYU for graduate school.

NYU does not place significantly better (or even better at all) than UVa in top jobs. UVa's placement even outside of McIntire is excellent for a public school. Additionally, outside of the NYC metropolitan area and the Princeton Review "Dream Colleges" list, I don't think NYU UG has a better reputation than UVa does. That certainly goes among educated people, recruiters from top firms and graduate schools. At the graduate level, NYU has a number of excellent programs (many that are stronger than their counterparts at UVa), but you're looking at an undergraduate education.

I generally try to give balanced advice to people asking similar questions, but I'd definitely lean towards UVa with this decision.

db123: Reputation does matter. It's true that one can succeed from any school, but there are entire industries that limit their recruiting to the top 25-35 universities and liberal arts colleges in the country. Want to get a competitive job in business that will lead to endless opportunities and a top business school? Best way to start is by attending a top college and taking a competitive job in consulting, banking, etc. Your college's reputation won't make or break your entire career, but it certainly is important and can lead to all sorts of wonderful opportunities.

NYU is very liberal, while UVA is relatively and somewhat conservative... Also would you like to live in a big city vs. a small town?

cav: I say that because the schools that the OP is choosing from both have excellent reputations. I guess I should have included the phrase "In this case."
