Hi people,
I know these kind of threads have been sent many times and discussed a lot and I am one of those who didn't even open these threads, but right now I am in a real dilemma and dont know what to do!?
UVA and NYU-GSP both have accepted me and I enrolled at both since I want to decide at the end of August after the financial aid packages have arrived.
NYU offered me 15K and 30K in loans. I will be a GSP student for the first two years then study Econ&Political Science. I want to continue at NYU Law school after graduation. at NYU I will have the opportunity to study abroad in Italy or Madrid. Also the internship and job opportunities at NYU are better than those at UVA (NYC factor!)
UVA is a better school in rankings and especially in Econ major(#23). I will not have to do a 2 year GSP program but concentrate on my major from my freshman year on. I did not receive any Financial Aid package from UVA yet. I will be far away from my father (NYC) and mother (Istanbul,Turkey), but there are a lot of friends I have who go there.
I am a very outgoing, self confident, social person so I dont think making friends will be a problem for me in both universities (NYU-no campus-less friendship??) and I am familiar with both universities, i visited both. NYU not having a campus does not bother me, I lived in NYC and love the city.
Although I believe that NYU is a better place for me and I can picture myself at WashingtonSquare rather than Charlottesville, if I choose NYU I will have to end up with 120K debt after my 4 yrs and probably another 100K for the law school. So at the age of 26 I will be a Law Graduate with quarter of a million debt!
But then i read that most of the students at American colleges start their lives with big amounts of debts.
I am a very indecisive person in situations like this, so I would really appreciate your thoughts on this subject.Thank you in advance to those who reply!

isnt it against the law to enroll at two schools? (with the only exception being if you're on the waitlist)

anyways...i'd say go with whichever school YOU LIKE and feel comfortable in or really would see yourself at. Most students at NYU, including myself, will be in debt. Its not a big surprise. The difference between NYU students and other students is that we are willing to take up loans and be in debt to go to NYU because we (or basically I) love it so much. Yes, its a lot of money, but college is a one-time thing. I really don't want to picture myself when i'm 30 saying "I really wish I had gone to NYU instead...of UCLA" -- (that was my big dilemma) and it seems similar to yours because UCLA and UVA are both reallly good public schools

Hey, I am turkish too, anyways I would choose NYU for your situation because NYU has a top 10-15 econ department and will be a better place if your interested in law school.

UVA is quite a bit higher in the USNEWS rankings, and UVA's law school is top-notch...so if you dont mind sacrificing prestige...then NYU seems viable.

choosing NYU would hardly be sacrificing prestige.

Thats another issue! Is UVA more prestigious than NYU? I know here in Istanbul people rather know NYU than UVA but what will my future employer think? Is being an UVA grad more valuable than being a NYU grad? (econ&pol science- int business law) and again is NYU (4yrs) worth >100K?

you arent sacrificing prestige as far as im concerned. this is (likely) one of the specific reasons why the ranking is so low--fin.aid

UVA definitely. It's just....better....by a lot

UVA = 23
NYU = 37

14 spots is a modest jump...wouldnt you agree? And considering he got into GSP, it's not exactly what he asked for. But he seems like he wants to attend NYU so more power to him. I'm not trying to discourage him or anything, if thats what youre thinking.

UVA is the #2? Public University in the US. That's a statement right there.

as far as ranking goes, no one can take it too seriously. don't let us news judge where you'll be at school. as far as anyone's concern, you'll get a great undergrad education anywhere, the difference is where you'll fit in, where you'll get the most out of your experience, etc...and if you love new york city and all the opportunities it offers then UVA definitely can't compare. but if you're looking for a suburban/rural experience in virginia, then you know UVA might be where you belong.

UVA is ur best bet academically, but u seem to like nyc

actually the only thing that matters the most is the money
Uva is less than the half of what NYU costs
if money wouldnt be a problem Id pick NYU immediately!
i think i am trying to convince myself that UVA is a better school so it wont hurt that much:)

If it is GSP,

go to UVA, hands down.

yeah, ull have a wider range of opportunities at UVA (especially for the first two years, since at nyu for this time ud have to take required classes)

How have you not decided already? May 1 is the decision date. It's unethical to say yes to two schools unless you're on a waiting list for one.

UVA is an excellent school and if you can go there with little debt, vs. large debt at NYU, I'd choose UVA. Keep in mind that most law school applicants will have worked for a few years after getting their u/g degree, and before applying to law school. Not many go straight from one to the other these days.

I'm kind of surprised that you got into UVA but were GSP'd at NYU.

Anyway, make up your mind, you're already three weeks late.

I have enrolled at NYU already but did not reject UVA's offer. Since May1st passed, there is quite a chance that my space is no more available at UVA.
it is the huge debt that scares me at NYU and if I still have a chance at UVA I might consider going there.

Why weren't you asking these questions almost two months ago when you got your acceptance letters? They don't say reply by May 1st because they're kidding around. I highly doubt you can change now. Plus you should have withdrawn your acceptance to other schools by May 1 so they could let people in off the waitlist.

thanks for the advice

Go to UVA. Your chances of getting into Law School from NYU straight out of undergrad from ANY school is low (less than 25% of admitted students didn't take a break). Do well on your LSATs and at school and you have an equal chance of getting in. GSP is a waste of time and your professors are not as good as normal NYU professors (I have friends in the program). New York City is also insanely expensive, and if you have loans its not a good idea. UVA is a phenominal school, if you had gotten in regular decision or at Stern, it would be a different story.
