Both are fine schools, but UVa overall has more panache nationally (though not necessarily within the CS community).

Where do you want to end up geographically after college? If you want East Coast, UVa MAY open more doors. Midwest or Silicon Valley, Illinois may be better for you.

What kind of college experience are you looking for? Both schools are in smallish college towns about 2 hours from major metro areas, but UVa is a substantially smaller university. Also, the out-of-state presence at UIUC is much less pronounced than at UVa. Both have thriving Greek scenes and big-time sports. Have you visited? Did either campus feel more “right” when you were there?

UVa is more prestigious, but in academic circles, it does lag behind Illinois and other solid state universities (and private universitities for that matter) in the sciences, math, and computer science–in fact, UVa is not even considered the best in those disciplines within the state of Virginia. The overall undergraduate experience at UVa, however, is likely to be more compelling to most people than Illinois.

TO MEDMAN:

What are your credentials in academia which enable you to assess the academics of

Illinois and Other Institutions over UVA? Pls list them to convince us.

My academic credentials are as follows: attended HS at the premier public high school in Northern Virginia; went on to Duke and transferred to Georgetown where I completed my undergraduate degree. Went on to Johns Hopkins Med. School, residency, and fellowship and am now on the faculty of both Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Med. schools. I serve on and am a member of 8 different academic and medical societies/organizations, including admissions at the undergraduate and medical school levels. However, the statements I make are not solely based on my experience in academia and with the institutions mentioned; these statements are part of common-knowledge within academic and public circles.

^ Wow- how on earth of you get any work done and what motivates you to deal with both undergrad and med school admissions? I’ve done MD/phD and fellowship admissions and each was too time consuming. What kind of faculty position is joint between JHU and GU? Bloomberg?

yianni12-UVa had an internal study done that analyzed some of the science and engineering shortcomings of UVa. it is pretty common knowledge.

UVa CS is pretty small, and might get smaller with the number of faculty going on sabbatical next semester. As long as you’re here for a well rounded education (ie. not grad school and not live-breathe-cs) that won’t matter, but it’s something to consider if you’re not sold either way.
