I’m down to just UVA or UNC. Im an out of state student (california) and a legacy at UVA and I’m majoring in either political science or business. Cost not a factor. I’m a pretty social guy so I’m not particularly worried about making friends although if I go to UVA I won’t know a single person… whereas at UNC i will be with my twin brother (fraternal, polar opposite personality who I’d prefer not to go to school with) as well as a longtime best friend. Basically I just want to know what the differences are between the atmospheres at both schools… I know UVA has a preppy, stuck up reputation… how much truth is there in that? How much different is that from UNC? Is UNC a lot more laid back or just a little? I also want to go into greek life and would like hear any experiences people have had regarding greek life at either university. Lastly, would it be difficult to get into one of the more popular frats at UVA?
I think its funny your relationship between your brother. You don’t need to worry to much about going to the same school as your brother. Both UVA and UNC are large enough that if even you both were on the same campus the likelihood you ever run into each other is very low. So if you wanted to avoid him, that’s very easy, just don’t live in the same building/dorm. But it can be nice having someone to rely on close by when you need them.
Between the two UVA has the more southern feel. More preppier. Frattier. More conservative.
UNC is more liberal, more open, more social. Just because your not from Frat XYZ doesn’t mean you don’t invited to parties.
Have you visited both campuses?
UNC is large but you actually often do run into people more than you would think, especially people in your class year (as your brother would be, of course). But you could totally develop your own identity, as ryanstark said, by living in separate dorms and not intentionally having identical class schedules lol. I am not a Greek but the UNC greek life culture is pretty prominent and active. I don’t like parties much but I have certainly been to some house parties as a non-Greek, though I believe males have issues getting into parties without Greek connections moreso than women do. Definitely more liberal than most places, but there is also a distinctive Southern feel. I love it here!
too funny - I’d say the opposite about the 2 vs. the 1st reply … that is, UNC preppier, more southern, UVA more liberal - though there seems to be a bigger prep school contingent at UVA. Can’t go wrong with either -
UVA is lit and so is UNC…forget stereotypes when there are thousands of kids they dont matter. That being said, you r already in UNC business school and you have to apply for it at UVA your second year. I havent been to UNC but UVA has a nice atmosphere and cville is nice. For business tho, ur guranteed entry at UNC while UVA is a different story.
