Hi
I'm a high school senior, and I was accepted to GMU, JMU, VCU, and rejected from William and Mary ( 3.6 gpa, 1850 SAT)I was so hell bent on going to VCU and had baseless qualms about applying to VT and UVA. Now, I have submitted my deposit for VCU and all b/c I feel like out of my three choices, VCU is more "pre-med friendly" in that it is located in an urban setting where I could have an abundance of shadowing/volunteering opportunities. They also have a pre-med commitee & pre med advisors that is immensely helpful by giving their LOR's and helping me through the process. I plan to do the guaranteed admissions/honors college as well. However, I now realize that despite this, I think I might not be challanged enough here and I have heard of classes ending early for no reason, etc... I want to make sure I am thoroughly prepared for the MCAT. I would be able to maintain a high gpa here. I know JMU is better than VCU academically, but Harrisonburg just seems to lack diversity in people and opportunities. My last option would be to attend VCU this fall and transfer to UVA or W&M in the spring. I really want to go to Baylor for medical school and I know that it is top notch. As it is, they only admit about 30% from out of state. Would I be a better candidate coming from a higher ranked school like UVA with good grades? Or would it be better to come from VCU with great grades, more EC's, higher GPA, etc...

The single thing you can do that will most improve your chances of gaining acceptance to Baylor COM is for your family to move to Texas and become Texas residents.

Baylor COM is partially supported by the state of Texas. 3/4th of its students are from Texas. Last application cycle it had ~4100 OOS applicants and accepted 119 (47 of whom matriculated) for an OOS acceptance rate of just over 3%. Really lousy odds, IMO.

Right now your focus should be on being the best student you can be at the school you’ve been accepted to. If after a year at VCU, you are so unhappy that your grades are suffering, then and only then should you consider a transfer.

As WOWmom says, your family living in Texas makes a big difference.

That said, no one at your stage (incoming frosh) should be focused on any one particular med school.

Med schools are NOT like undergrads. Med school education is rather flat. Everyone learns the same things. All US MD schools are excellent. There are no “so so” US MD schools. Getting into ANY US MD school is an achievement.

This is what is odd about US MD schools: A good number are on college campuses of schools that many students would never have considered for undergrad. My son has three MD acceptances. One is on a campus of a college that he never would have attended as an undergrad, yet the MD school is excellent and if that had been his only MD acceptance, he would have happily attended that med school.

did you already get accepted into vcu’s guaranteed program? your gpa and sat are pretty low for that program. also you need a 1910 for honors. Are you planning on transferring into honors after the first year?
