I was recently chosen as a presidential scholar at Villanova for the business school, but UVA was originally my top choice and I received a likely letter. I love UVA but I can attend Villanova for free (no tuition, room, board, books). I am concerned about the social scene at Villanova. Which should I choose?

Are you a Va resident? If so Va state schools are reasonable. Nova is a great school too so you really can’t go wrong.

Congratulations ! This is a good problem to have.
Wow , an incredibly difficult choice. Presidential scholarship , full ride to Villanova vs one of the finest state schools.

The cost factor is an individual family factor , so I will not comment on that.
The primary decision should be based on the fact that these are 2 very different places.
Suburban Phiily or Charlottesville? Large or medium ? Public or private ? Catholic or secular? Mid Atlantic mostly Va student body or mostly northeast ? Large campus vs small campus ?
Big East or ACC ?

Both are in Business Week top 10 undergrad business schools.

You have to pick where you think you will be most comfortable as a student and which educational experience will fit you best. Looks like a win/win situation.

Congrats!! A Presidential Scholarship is something hard to pass up. How do you like to spend your free time? As a scholar you will be expected to be heavily involved in the service aspect of Nova. Does spending spring break with Habitat for Humanity interest you? Is volunteering your time with Special Olympics, days of service, being out in the community all while maintaining a 3.5 GPA something you are looking for in a college experience? As Im sure you know from spending Scholars weekend on campus, Greek life is not a big part of the social scene, however hopping the train to Philly is. And of course there’s always basketball…

thank you! I am an out of state resident so UVA will not be very cheap. I would also graduate with much debt if I attended UVA, but it is my dream school. Such a tough choice!

I am the parent of a UVa grad and love UVa BUT I really would suggest you carefully look at amount of debt you are willing/able to take on before you make a final decision. Only you can decide if the debt would be worth it to you if you chose UVa. Good luck!

If cost is an issue, Villanova would be my pick. Even with all things equal, this could be a tough decision, so definitely with money in the picture, go with the one that will keep you out of debt. First business lesson to learn!
