I was accepted at both UVa and W&M. Which would be the better school for psychology studies? Any difference in acceptance rates into med schools? Has more success in placing students into top medical schools?

They're both very good. Your decision at this point should be made on non-academic factors.

So, they are similar at the academic level? Same prestige?

Yes. (10 characters)

uva is more prestigious to non-academia people.

Though I may not know much, from what I have read or heard W & M is better in the sciences than UVA, though I prefer UVA myself. But then in other programs UVA has a slight edge over W & M. So if its medical school go W & M ( read somewhere 80% of their med school applicants get accepted) which is awesome.

None of that is true.

If you say so

I don't understand how sciences at a smaller liberal arts school would be better than sciences a larger institution with presumably more funding/resources/research opportunities.. but maybe I'm seriously misguided? I'm not sure.

Anyway, hopeforfuture, congrats on getting into both schools. Your decision really should be based on non-academic factors as both are schools of the same caliber. I think UVA is more well-known to people in general and their sports are definitely a plus, but of course none of this matters on you grad school application as they are both excellent schools. UVA, however, has a great medical school so I think that is definitely a plus whereas W&M has no medical school so you wouldn't be able to get the hands-on experience/research/connections there as an undergraduate. Definitely visit them if you have time, I'm assuming youre instate so it shouldnt be too bad of a drive. And if you're not instate then you should get good advice from this board :)

W&M produced four presidents. UVA only 1 (Law School). In fact, the very founder of UVA, Mr. TJ, was actually a W&M grad; so was GEORGE WASHINGTON, AMERICAN HERO AND FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. When W&M was the preeminent college in the South and one of the best in the United States, UVA was a mere academical village. So if we're talkin' about prestige, sir, W&M all the way!!! Afterall, W&M was directly named after royalty, King William and Queen Mary. UVA was merely named after the state, which is only implicitly named after the Virgin Queen; by then, the colonies have already "dissolve[d]" their political bonds with Britain, so there was really no connection to any royalty name for UVA; that's right UVA is just a state university---every 50 state has one, NOTHING SPECIAL: University of Arizona, University of New Mexico, University of Alasaka, etc. Therefore, if you go to W&M, people will think you're a southern gentleman; go the UVA, just some village pumpkin who read some books at state university.

zhonggong, that criteria on judging prestige is the biggest load of ******** i've ever read

clearly, fjchowdhury, you are no southern gentleman.

clearly. haha

zhonggong, your engrish sucks. No wonder you didn't get into UVA. lolZ.

I'm thinking of going to W&M because I like small classes and I'm not into sport games. No offense :-D Is it okay if I can do undergraduate studies at WM and research at a larger institution in the summer?

W&M is a smaller school. That doesn't necessarily mean the classes will be smaller.

Cavalier, what is the average class size at UVA?

I'm not sure. It's probably comparable to the average class size at W&M. It's a statistic that is important but should not lead you to make any decisions at this point. As I said before, the differences between UVA and W&M academically and prestige-wise are almost non-existent. You should choose on non-academic factors. Which one would you feel more comfortable at? Which is cheaper? etc.

"UVA was merely named after the state, which is only implicitly named after the Virgin Queen; by then, the colonies have already "dissolve[d]" their political bonds with Britain, so there was really no connection to any royalty name for UVA; that's right UVA is just a state university---every 50 state has one, NOTHING SPECIAL"

Hmm... I guess being the only university in the United States to be named a UN World Heritage Site isn't a big deal. Oh yeah, W&M is a state school as well.

lol, there's nothing to be gained from responding to that troll. This is the guy who tried to put down people by making up BS just because they got into substantially better schools than him- that was amusing.
