do you own a home overseas…or do you on a home here in the states…where you don’t live?
I’m surprised they didn’t offer any Perkins loans to your package.
I think we can all just speculate at this point. You have emailed financial services and hopefully they will get back to you soon to go over how they have come up with what they are expecting you to pay.
The Perkins loan is for lower income students. I’m not sure this student fits that criteria.
In addition, the Perkins is being discontinued…so for four year planning…it’s not a good option.
@thumper1: We were offered a Perkins loan from UVA with a decent income.
Home is owned overseas. We used to own a home in California, but sold it to cover legal fees, and used the rest to pay off loans. Not sure how much we gained, but it was a significant amount.
They haven’t responded yet, and I will update this thread once I see what the problem is / if I get more aid.
I have a feeling the gain on the house was treated as income, even though it was used to buy the other (pay off loans on the other).
They replied with a very generic answer: using your data, we determined the loans would meet 100% demonstrated need.
I sent another email asking exactly what caused this.
Then all you can do is what you are doing-ask for clarification. Good luck!
I hope this has worked out for you. Our own experience with UVA Financial Services has been shockingly negative. Their claims as related to meeting financial need appear to be taglines or cynical jokes versus actual operational standards. As is the case with all public universities in Virginia, UVA has faced pressure from the General Assembly and the public generally to address their own costs and the extraordinary increases in fees and tuition during the recent decade - their responses have been empty promises and bait-and-switch strategies, it seems.
No financial aid at all. For a university guaranteeing 100% demonstrated need, $0 was truly surprising. I’m attending Brown with 54k in grants.
We are completely freaking out here as well. Our FAFSA EFC was $5,000. We received $0 grants/scholarships in our preliminary letter! All we received is a $970 pell grant and some loans.
