UVA Prospective

UVA would be my dream school and I would love to attend there, but I know it's not easy at all. I'm currently a HS Junior and I want to know my chances of getting in and how to improve my chances. First of all, I want to say that my classload is probably not as challenging as other people's might be, but you have to understand that I live in an economically disadvantaged area and my school does not offer very many honors or AP classes. Most of the ones they do offer are online. This year I'm taking 2 AP's- APUSH and psychology. Next year I'm planning on taking AP English, AP bio, AP government, AP European history, AP environmental science, calculus (not AP), and band. I have an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and each AP class is worth 0.036 on my GPA. I haven't taken my SAT yet (planning to do so in the spring), but my PSAT score was 214, if that helps. I'm a majorette in the band, on the forensics team, interact club secretary, member of the beta club, and a member of an anti-drug club which works with 5th graders in the DARE program. I have taken a few short term mission trips over the summer to impoverished areas. However, I'm in a strange situation. I live in WV, but attend school in VA. I know it's easier to get in if you live in-state, but do you think attending a VA high school will help? Do you think I have a shot at UVA? How can I improve my chances? Thanks so much! :)

That’s fine. Colleges know that each school is different, so just take advantage of as many opportunities (or in this case, challenging classes) as you can. Looking at the amount of APs you’ve listed though, your high school actually seems to have a pretty nice amount of APs.

Your GPA looks great, keep it up! If you get a 2140 on the SAT, I’d say that’s a decent score. UVA is University of Virginia, right? (Sorry, I am clueless because I mostly focused on the UCs.) If you look here https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/university-of-virginia</a> you’d see that more weight is apparently placed on your GPA than your test scores, so don’t worry TOO much about those.

I don’t think that going to a high school within the state counts…not sure though.

I definitely think you have a shot at UVA. The only advice I can give you is the typical stuff: keep your grades up, take advantage of opportunities that your school offers, write a great essay, and get to know your teachers/counselors to get good recommendations (it’s a great idea to get to know them even without the recommendations thing though).

Do you already know what you’ll be majoring in?

As a side note, next time you write a chance post, separate the information so that it isn’t a big block of text. It’s much easier on the eyes that way.
