Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none, these are very rare in my country

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
OK I LACK A LOT OF LEADERSHIP, I KNOW. I was never into leadership roles and wanted to be a leader in my own ways. Positions shouldn’t define you.

National music honor society (lead alto saxophone)
Jazz band (lead alto sax)
South American international music festival (lead alto sax)
Writing my online cookbook on Blogger
Literary magazine and school newspaper (I post my narratives and recipes, does that count as leadership LOL)
Musical theater (part of music ensemble)
Varsity trail running, varsity track and field (I kinda suck and always fall behind)
Co-admin of Facebook fan-pages for my favorite band, The Gazette <3

Job/Work Experience: none, rare in my country
Volunteer/Community service:
Make a wish (fundraising),
fundraising and introducing music and the arts to children in a local orphanage
Summer Activities: do they get to know about this? I went to Antarctica in February to snow climb and took shots of penguins and stuff (I live in the southern hemisphere so summer here is Dec-Feb), trail running, cultural trip to China and Colombia, lots of traveling

Rate out of 10
Essays: 9–Common App was great. I grew up with two clashing cultures (Chile-China) in a country where diversity and open-mindedness are not the norm. Wrote about my skepticism towards ignorance and inflexibility. My favorite band is a Japanese goth metal band and I wrote about using the Internet to make a community of online friends who share my passion for strange music and making music covers to post online, hoping our band members would notice us . The supplement could have been more tied to the school though. I wrote, with the perspective of a millennial, about economics and consumer psychology in modern times, especially with the meme culture, Buzzfeed, fidget spinner market, and Bitcoin.
Teacher Recommendation: (Chemistry, English) I wasn’t allowed to read them, I’d say average/generic. I love both teachers but my English teacher had to write 20+ recs.
Counselor Rec: no clue
Additional Rec: none
Other: submitted two music supplement videos

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: double major music and economics, but I’m actually thinking about music with CS instead

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 8/9, from my Chem teacher, I remember he said I’m the first student to question and discover a mistake in the pretty prestigious textbook during my first-year chemistry learning
Teacher Rec #2: 8/9 from APUSH teacher, knows I’m pretty good at writing and also knows I love caligraphy and once handwrote a real-size Declaration of Independence for that class.
Counselor Rec: 7 not very familiar, probably mediocre

Interview: Did not have any from UVA

Other
I transferred to an American high school on my sophomore year, and our school did not allow first-year international student to take ANY AP Classes & and only started letting me take them since junior year (5 APs). Bummer.
*
Entering many contests such as Chemistry Olympia requires a green card…
***I’m not officially “IN” the program because the fees are too high. My tuition & host family fees are already very expensive, so I talked to this teacher and convinced her to let me take the classes normally only open to students in the program (Genetics H, Neuroscience H) (really amazing pre-med experience), but I can’t say I’m part of the program

Applied for Financial Aid?: No

Pretty different from typical Asian stereotype (although they can’t really tell since no interview)
A little bit feminist

Reflection
Strengths: good scores and pretty good gpa, unique point of view (kind of)

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Yale SCEA, Rejected from MIT, Waitlisted at WUSTL, Tulane (didn’t write the optional essay, probably realized it’s a safety school), Johns Hopkins, UChicago (should’ve applied ED lol)
General Comments: glad my first offer finally came…

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 730 M 720 R 1450 C
ACT (breakdown): N/A
SAT II: N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.6

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I do not know if any of these count as “Major Awards” but they are slightly more than extracurriculars soooo… Conrad Spirit of Innovation Semi-finalist (International engineering competition), Jefferson Scholar nominee (School), Named Head Prefect for my school for the 2017-2018 academic year (highest form of student leadership, essentially an unpaid member of the administration… overseeing all student leadership and organizations and reporting to admin and head of school)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Soccer (Four Years, Most Improved 2015, three year captain, MVP 2017), Varsity Lacrosse (Four Years, Most Improved 2015, three year captain), JV/Varsity Basketball ( JV Most Improved 2015, VISAA D III State Champion 2015), Model UN (Secretary), Honor Council, Founding Member of the Video Club (Commentated and livestreamed basketball games and made ads for local businesses), Science Olympiad, Student Ambassador, Indoor Winter Lacrosse League

Volunteer/Community service: None that I put on the app, I plant trees a couple of times a year, but that’s it.
Summer Activities: Travel Lacrosse with two teams (Evergreen 2018 Elite and NovaWest Elite Flamingos)… this basically takes up my whole summer lol
Essays (rating 1-10, details): “What would you write on beta bridge essay” worked very hard on this one and it is probably my favorite college essay I wrote so 9 or 10/10 (from my perspective ofc)
E-School Essay: hard to write, but I feel like it ended up really coming from my heart so 7 or 8/10
Common App Essay: Definitely the best essay I had and was the toughest to write about because I really dug deep in this one I say 10/10 because I hella exposed who I am, but that was the point of it lol.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Head of School who I work with all the time. We have a great relationship and I had him for two classes. I did not see the rec, but my counselor said it was very good 9?/10
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher/favorite teacher ever. She helped me through this process all of the way through and really had my back when things got tough. Had to be a 10/10, and even if it was bad I still love this teacher.
Counselor Rec: Probably good
Additional Rec: My advisor, known her since I was in second grade. She has seen me grow and we get along really well. Think it was great 10/10.
Interview: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Systems Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): Virginia
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Small Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Thanks for working hard, dad. (well-off)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, legacy etc.): My brother and sister both graduated from UVA, but the app did not ask about that so I don’t think it had any impact

Reflection

Strengths: SAT was solid, extracurriculars (mainly how in depth I got involved in these extracurriculars, I really think they looked at that and not just looked for if I did x amount of things), essays (I spent so much time on these essays and really gave it all I had) , and teacher recs
Weaknesses: GPA… it is much lower than UVA advertises their accepted students of having. I definitely was not a straight A student. I would be very close if my school weighted scores, but we don’t.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted because the admissions staff looked at me as a whole person and not just my grades and various numbers associated with me. I think they saw I was capable of doing very well in school and then saw how involved I was in my school community. #HolisticReview
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: JMU, Virginia Tech, William and Mary… Waitlisted: Richmond… Rejected: Georgia Tech and Boston College

General Comments:
UVA has been my dream school ever since I stepped foot on Grounds for my brother’s orientation when I was in 5th grade. This truly is a dream come true and I could not be happier. Good luck to everyone reading this who is applying or thinking about applying! I definitely have been there before and I know what is going through your head right now. Just know that no matter where you end up, you are still you, and YOU can do great things. The school on the diploma doesn’t matter it’s YOU that matters.
