UVA, Rice, or NC State Honors

I've been accepted to three schools: UVA, Rice, and NC State, and I just found out that I got accepted to the Honors college at NC State. They are all good schools, but the problem is I can't decide which one I want to go to. I'm still waiting to hear final financial aid figures, and that will affect my decision. Our EFC is zero, so hopefully we can get some good aid packages. I'm not sure what kind of engineering I want to major in, but I'm leaning toward mechanical or electrical. What are your opinions about the engineering programs of the three schools?

My plan is to get my Bachelor's and work for a big company. I'd like to work on designing or improving products. I'm also thinking about going back to get my Master's or PhD eventually.

Oh, and I'm also on the wait list for Duke and Cornell

They’re all very different. (Rice! Rice! Rice!) Have you visited them? They have very different campus “feels” to them (RICE!! Choose Rice!), so visiting them would probably be very helpful in determining which school would be a best fit for you. (Rice!)

Waiting to see what financial aid you get from each school would also help you out a lot. (You should go to Rice)

I’m an alumnus of one of those three, so I don’t want to taint your decision by mentioning where I went (GO OWLS)… Go ahead and take a look at campus life at the three schools, see which appeals to you most, and start talking to students who’re currently on campus, if you can. Any of the three would give you great opportunities. (But Rice would be best.)

UVA is good, but if you’re going out of state Rice is better. Then, between NC and Rice, I’d pick Rice. Honors only helps a little bit.

Just an update- the financial aid packages from all 3 were amazing. I visited UVA and spent the night on campus. It was good but not what I was expecting as far as feeling right away that it was either perfect or not.
Then, I visited Rice and loved it. I came home ready to say, “I’m going to Rice.” As soon as I got home from the airport, I found out that I got into Duke. Now I don’t know what to choose between Rice and Duke.

Have you visited Duke? Rice is way better than Duke. (bias alert…)

Rice>Duke for engineering.

(Jimmy’s Mom here)
We visited Duke last April. We are planning to visit again next week so he can now compare it with Rice. He has about two weeks to let Duke know.
In the meantime, he has accepted a spot at Rice and is leaning towards Rice. He just wants to be sure before he turns Duke down.
