UVA Spring 2015 Transfer Thread

Hi guys, I know it's still a little early, but seeing as spring transfer applications are due October 1st, I thought I would make a thread. So is anyone else applying to transfer to UVA this spring? I guess we can just do the typical stats sharing that is common in the transfer threads here on CC. I'll go first.

George Washington University.
Current GPA: 3.5
Applying to: College of Arts and Science

Good extracurriculars, 2 professor recommendations,

any chance?

Davidson College
Current GPA: 3.85

Applying to the College of Arts and Science and hoping to possibly minor or transfer into the engineering school/biology major.
High school GPA: 4.65/4.0 unweighted
Live in Virginia, was accepted to UVA when applying to schools out of high school, but applied ED II to Davidson.
Decent amount of extracurriculars, Eating House, Chinese Culture Club, Club Swim Officer. Aided seniors in their senior thesis for cognitive psychology by collecting and helping to analyze their data. Took two semesters of physics over the summer at UVA. Two professor/advisor recommendations.

So nerve wracking to not know if we get in or not until December! Any idea how housing works or when to submit the midterm report? Why are you all transferring?

@wildkitten‌ Where in VA are you from? I’m from Arlington. And we don’t find out until December?! Is it not rolling admissions?

Hi guys - I just transferred to UVa this semester, so I can try to help with any transfer questions you have. (Housing, course selection, orientation, whatever.) I’m still pretty new to UVa myself but it’s been amazing so far. Good luck to all!

I’m from Winchester, Virginia! Yeah, or at least that’s what the website says, that they release decisions December 1st. Rolling admissions would be sweet though.

@ApertureRun Do you mind providing your stats?

Sure.

I transferred from Mary Baldwin College, and I’m in-state. I’m now a second-year in the College.
College GPA: 3.78 when I applied, taking an overload both semesters.
Extracurrics: Gaming club, leadership council, crisis counseling hotline - with a supervisory/leadership position in each.
High school GPA/extracurrics: none, I skipped high school through an early college acceleration program.

My essays were pretty good. I know my recommendations were very strong. I think a huge boost for me was my young age, but I know plenty of transfers who don’t have that immediate hook and still got in. January transfer admissions are a good deal more competitive than in the fall, though, so I really recommend mentally preparing yourself to reapply in the fall if you’re dead-set on UVa (the application rolls over, so it’s not extra work on your part). Let me know if I can help at all otherwise.

@ApertureRun‌ Oh wow that is very impressive.
Now as someone who was in my position before and succeeded getting in as a transfer–what would you think my chances are?

George Washington University–GPA as of 2nd semester: 3.52
Eligible for In-State and applying to College of Arts and Science.
I will have finished all of the CAS requirements by the end of this semester and hopefully get all A’s bringing my GPA to a 3.66? 3.68? (only taking 13 credits this semester).

Good essays and strong recommendations from 2 professors and 1 recommendation from intern.
I have good extracurriculars.

I have applied last year and unfortunately did not get in so I am applying for this spring. If I do not get in, I will re-apply last time for Fall.

Be honest of my chances for this spring and next fall if I do not get in.

It would be much appreciated.

PS: on my SIS, it already indicates a green circle (meaning “complete”)…what could that signify…

(Advance disclaimer - Take any chances I give with a grain of salt; I’m just a student and I don’t want to claim authority that I don’t have.) Your stats are in line with what I’ve seen from many other admitted transfers. It’s definitely a big plus that you have all of the requirements done. With the fact you’re in-state, I would say you will absolutely be competitive in the fall. I’m hesitant to say anything about the spring, because with the selectivity, it’s a total cr*pshoot. It really is. You can go crazy trying to figure out your chances, but even though I personally would say you’re very qualified, there are just too few spots (35, right?) for everyone who deserves to get in. It’s good that you’re open to trying once more in the fall.

Haha, the green circle confusion all over again… yeah, SIS will mess with your head like that. (There was massive confusion in a facebook group about that for the fall applicants - we contacted admissions about it b/c we were so worried.) It doesn’t mean anything other than that your application is done.

@ApertureRun‌ Do you know how many apply for the ~35 slots? And did you live in an apartment or a dorm after you transferred?

From what I know of last year, for the spring, typically around 800 apply and for the fall its around 2000 applicants.

@ApertureRun‌ Thanks for the insight. I guess we’ll just have to wait at this point.

Really?? I read somewhere they accept around 12-18% depending on the number of applicants which would peg 800 a little high (I was hoping to confirm that number) and about 36% of applicants in the fall.

@UvaLee‌ No problem, I wish I could have been more helpful.

@wildkitten‌ Yeah, the website says “several hundred”, so I think your percentages are probably fairly accurate. I live on-Grounds in the IRC.

My apologies. The UVA website says typically a few hundred students apply (doesn’t say exact number) and there are normally 35 spaces (plus or minus) for spring applicants.

My application has finally been listed as complete! Now to wait for December 1. Actually, UVA apparently emails out the decisions on the last day of November at 5pm, and it’s the decision letters that are snail mailed out on December 1st.

I’m not sure this is a glitch….

On the sis page, it says my admissions decision is ready. However, when I click the button, it says the decision is not ready. Is everyone experiencing this?

Yes, same here.

When I saw that earlier I was so excited. What if admissions realized that they could toy with my life by pulling some prank like that. Oh God it would be the worst thing ever.

We’ve covered this on the blogs a lot.
