UVa stands out in a new college ranking

<p>UVa was ranked at 20th in a new college ranking published by a Harvard professor along with other reputable college professors. Among public universities UVa was at the top.This new ranking, which is very interesting, took a different approach from the more popular US News ranking system and was mostly based on the students' preference. As a result, some universities that were ranked high in US News ranking were moved down quite a bit. NY Times today has an article about this ranking as well. Follow the link below for details.</p>

<p>I find it interesting that people on this website will say that UVa isn't that well-known outside of the East Coast, but according this Harvard finding, Virginia is more popular in some Midwestern states than in the East Coast. In Table 6, people from Region 4 (Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska) ranked UVa #17, while people in Region 8 (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah & Wyoming) ranked UVa #18. Even in the West Coast (Region 9), when given a choice people pick UVa over Berkeley, UCLA, USC and Pomona.</p>

<p>Its an interesting survey, but it obviously has an internal bias in that it measures only against schools that they had the chance to attend. Most Californians don't even apply, of course. Of those that do, if admitted to both places, they apparently prefer UVa, 9 out of 10 times. However, you don't know the size of the sample in these head to head choices. If its only7 instances, its interesting, but not a compelling statistic.</p>

<p>I found table four very interesting, if I understand what it is showing. Indicates that head to head, UVa is preferred to Duke and Northwestern by a wide margin. Obviously costs factor into this chart too. Maybe I don't understand the table.</p>

<p>I know that UVa has a high yield (the percentage of people who choose to attend a school out of the total number accepted). Only a handful of schools have yields above 50%. UVa is like 54%.</p>
