WHEEEW...I just got my winter quarter grades (yep thats right, OSU is on the wonderful quarter system) and I got 3 A-'s and one A (3.75gpa). This only raises my cumm gpa from a 3.63 to a 3.66, but the courses a took were another round of 200-600 level architecture courses and gives me deans list distinctions for a fourth quarter in a row (four out of five possible). Hopefully all of this will get me alittle bit closer to that 7% acceptance rate. Any thoughts?

Way to go, buckeye! If only my gpa was that good this semester. From what I've read here on the transfer forum, UVa doesn't pay a lot of attention to grades after the fall semester. Something about because not everyone can send theirs in, they don't see it as being fair. But, you can always try because although it may not help, it definitely can't hurt.

7%?! Is that for out-of-state transfers or all transfers? Where did you get that figure from? What is the acceptance rate for in-state transfers? Also, good job buckeye.

"7%?! Is that for out-of-state transfers or all transfers? Where did you get that figure from? What is the acceptance rate for in-state transfers?"

Do not be alarmed....that 7% (actually i read miscorrectly, it was 7 offers made...more like a 10% average) is the acceptance rate for UVa's architecture school only. Arts and Sciences retains something closer to 40%.

Many of the stats regarding transfer admissions can be found here: http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_transfer.htm

Wow, the acceptance rate for the School of Architecture is quite low, especially when compared to the rates for the other schools. The acceptance rate for the School of Engineering is about 45% (yay).

I applied to Arts & Sciences with a 39% acceptance rate. While it's not as good as 45%, it's certainly better than the 8% for Architecture. But not to worry, buckeye. I'm bettin' you're in. :)

Ugh! Just found out some of my grades this semester...all B's and 1 A. That will certainly bring the gpa down. I'm working like crazy just to keep the B's. It has really been tough this semester. Even thought of dropping a class, but it's too late now. I'm in for the long haul I suppose.

I sure hope the EC's and essay help me out. Only time will tell, but the longer I wait the more doubtful I am of receiving acceptance.

Come on guys, where's the support group? ;)

It hasn't even been two hours since your previous post! Heh. Anyways - don't worry, everything will be fine.

update - now it has.

Katt,

Those numbers are a bit deceiving. Look at the total offers of each school; 7 offers for A-school vs 629 offers for A&S. The odds are better at Arts & Sciences. Of course, the A-school is a top 5 school.

BTW, I just got my Va. residency letter today. Second time they questioned my Va. residency.

Good luck!

I know, just like hearing from everyone else going through this pain-staking process.

And yeah, I guess it is nice to know that A&S have a larger number of offers, for what it's worth.

Katt,

Are those your mid-terms? You certainly could turn one or two of those B's to A's if they're only mid-terms. If any are close, try to negotiate with your instructors.

Keep a stiff upper lip. Fight the good fight, and never give up!

Just wanted to let anyone know...If you have good midterm grades just get ur teachers to write the grade and sign it on a piece of paper and send it in soon...it can only help! Greg Roberts told me this

They are mid-term grades. There is one that I know I'm really close, so I will talk with the prof.

Why would they question your VA residency? Just curious...

Katt,

They are probably questioning my residency cause I didn't go to high school here. Probably cause my folks are in a different state...etc. I'm sure they have their reasons. I just can't understand why they are asking AGAIN.

Since this seems like the best place to yowl and express negativity relating to our chances of being accepted to UVA, I think it's time I have a go:

Rather than explain my concerns, I will list them in pro/con comparative format-

pro: 4.0 gpa over three semesters.

cons: everything else is bad. HS records are extremely unimpressive (3.1 gpa, 1150 SAT). perhaps what is the worst is the fact that this semester I highly doubt I will be making all A's. (Excuse for Physics: irascible professor who does not curve any of his nearly impossible tests, despite class average < 50%.) Differential equations is just plain difficult. Other than that, I am expecting A's in the other two classes this semester.

Big problem: For the 3 completed semesters, the course load was small: 14 hrs, 13hrs, /10/ hrs(!), and 13 hrs this semester. Worse, the classes I took during these first three semesters were relatively easy courses (100-200 level with 500 being gradulate level). NOT GOOD! NOT GOOD! Stats are therefore unimpressive, and I am worthless to UVA (or to any other >=decent school).

Bigger problem: I can't think of any, but I'm sure they are there.

SSRIs. I need SSRIs. GIVE ME SSRIs!

Looks like I did more explaining (i.e. bellyaching) than listing. Oh well.

I'll give this a shot too...

Pro's:
High School Record [4.0 u/w/4.8+? w (I'm guessing this), valedictorian in class of approx 400-500], 1380 SAT (not great, but won't hurt), Good ECs, Good College Grades in business related courses (econ, math, midterms for stats and accounting), 16, 16, 15, 17 credit hours for my four semesters... (3.775 cumulative gpa for freshman year; 3.78 midterms), Essays justify why I'm switching majors (business to journalism) and why I should perform well in my new major

Con's:
Dropped off last semester (3.46 GPA, only 13 credits were for grades, the other 2 were for a pass/fail lifeguarding course), low level courses (none higher than 200 level, lower grades are in those courses aka my B+'s and my one B) changing majors, one pre-req short, taking two other pre-reqs this semester (aced both for midterms though), out-of-state, the main essay was kind of short (360ish words, not sure if this actually bad though), So-so SAT II's (M IC 660, WR 620, US His 600), Commerce school has lower admissions than UVA as a whole

Unfortunately, high school probably won't mean much for me since I'm appying as a junior.. and my one bad semester was my last semester... so I'm worried that everything up until last semester will not be enough... hopefully my midterms are taken into account to show that was an exception for me and not what is to be expected...

I can definitely relate, christophsky.

Pros: 3.65 gpa fall semester
Leadership positions at UMD
Lots of leadership positions in HS (if it makes a difference)
2 Very good recs (here again, not sure if it makes a difference)
In-state

Cons: Applying as a freshman
3.5 HS gpa
1200 SAT
Probably only a 3.2 or 3.3 this semester (can't really tell yet)
Now I'm thinking just a so-so essay

Well Toph, I don't think you have anything to worry about. These admissions people are human beings, and will notice your stellar HS stats--regardless of what they say. 16, 16, 15, 17 credit hours and still keeping a GPA >3.5 is, in my opinion, more noteworthy than 14, 13, 10, 13 and GPA==4.

Let's all post our "main" essays (No. 7). I'll wait until I get the word that others are willing to participate (and of course still have their essay in a digital format.)

Christophsky, I'm not a huge fan of posting my essays... but I'll email you it or all of three of them if you want to look at them. And I'd be happy to read yours also.
