UVA versus Duke.. welcome to my ironic life

okay so when i walked onto the campus at uva, i was in love at first sight. don't get me wrong- uva was my baby. i had also visited duke on a cold gross day and was cranky and just didn't like the fact that it was, as i called it "in the middle of nowhere" (not that charlottesville is "in the middle of somewhere"). i got into uva but got waitlisted at duke. naturally, i got all excited about uva but something in my heart told me that i just wasn't going to go. then today i got the call from duke. i flipped. this is such a hard decision and i would really appreciate some insight... some facts

major: biomedical engineering- duke is one of the TOP BME in the country.. uva's is great but doesn't really come close...

also, i will be pre-med and i understand that a name like DUKE is huge in medical school acceptance.

i mean, you have to understand that i'm a girl who has been working her butt off for four years and to get into duke is just, the ultimate reward i could ask for... but what if i don't like the fact that duke is in the middle of nowhere? is it worth turning down another school i love???

your thoughts please...

Does money factor into the decision?

I don’t think Duke is in the middle of nowhere…

Duke’s doing the waitlist? Before May 1? Why would they do that?

@plumazul: I got the call today. Said they knew they had space in Pratt and there wasn’t any point waiting I guess… Makes sense to tell people as soon as possible.

Pea: yes, money is a factor. though i applied for financial aid and the aid at duke will hopefully be better than UVA or at least somewhere around the same. basically, it will be expensive at either one.

ItsJackYo: do you go to duke? could you show me some insight into student life? i’m only saying that from an outsiders’ perspective (i’m also from the north and not far from civilization)

and yes, they are doing the waitlist already i was quite surprised myself.

Schools go to their wait lists as soon as they know they have space. Didn’t they give you a estimated financial aid package when they offered you a spot from the wait list.

i’m getting a packet tomorrow, apparently.

Well, all this gives me some reason for hope. Maybe the increase in applications was just the same people using the common app, … and just maybe the top schools admitted many of the same people …?

@ac, “i applied for financial aid and the aid at duke will hopefully be better than UVA”

Of all the top tier colleges where I was accepted, Duke offered me the best FA. (WashU the worst) … Congrats and best of luck, …

if you can go to Duke for BME for similar money, there is no choice…go to Duke. Prepare to work very very hard but to enjoy a stunning campus full of spirited fun loving people.

(both sons turned down UVA undergrad with Echols but hope to go back to Virginia for graduate school…elder son is Duke 09. Both boys love UVA and have some regrets about missing out on that experience but you need to really look at what Duke has to offer you in engineering as your key factor)

Duke in the middle of nowhere? Duke is in a city of 200,000+ in a metro area of 1 million+. UVa is in a city of 40,000. The nearest city of 50,000+ is Lynchburg, VA with 60,000, nearly 60 miles away. The nearest city of 200,000+ (i.e. the size of Durham) is Washington, DC, 100 miles away.

There are certainly valid reason to like UVa more than Duke, but being in the middle of nowhere isn’t one of them. For BME, I think Duke is a pretty obvious choice, especially if it costs less. But UVa is no slouch.

plumazul- that’s great to hear! and thanks!

Faline2- thanks for the insight and i agree with you, duke’s BME is practically impossible to turn down…

bluedog- well, i don’t know too much about the area surrounding duke other than the fact that upon visiting it, i felt like there was not much past the front gates. however, i did not venture far from campus, and, if what you are saying is correct, then that is quite a relief! and yes i agree with you about duke BME… thanks for the advice!

Pfrosh unfortunately don’t get to visit Durham bur Durham is DEFINITELY not “the
middle of nowwhere.”

here’s a little about Duke’s social scene:

duke is stingy with fin aid. uva will be cheaper. if you really want bme, then duke.

above statement is false. Financial aid at Duke is very very good. If you qualify. which we didn’t…

full pay is really really tough and not advisable unless you are being very strict and honest with yourself re your family resources.

I’m going to UVA next year, so my opinion may seem biased. However upon visiting both Duke and UVA, I found UVA’s surroundings a bit more enjoyable and closer. Durham didn’t appease me much–and actually seemed kind of boring, but everyone will feel differently about this. UVA has shops, restaurants, etc., and I’m sure Durham does as well, but my question would be, how accessible are they from campus compared to UVA? Durham does have something to offer, but as eatsalot mentioned, you probably won’t be going far off campus for the first year or two. I’m only discussing immediate surrounding areas here. Duke is undoubtedly a great school, and so is UVA. I really feel you need to pick the school that you will be comfortable in and do well in for 4 years. Do some additional research.
