UVA vs. GT vs. UT Austin

I got accepted to these three, but I want to go to either Rice or Vandy. However, I got waitlisted to both of them, so in the meantime I need to decide between these three. Right now I want to do something in engineering but I'm not entirely sure. I'm from Georgia and I hate it here. Convince me what I should do. Thanks in advance.

There should be a dramatic difference in the cost to your family for all three. What can your family afford?

Assuming money isn’t an issue. I like things about all three. I’ll cross the money bridge when I get to it. I’m just trying to make a decision about the best experience, educational, social, etc.

UVA out-of-state is really expensive, but you probably will get some financial aid. UVA is overall academically very good. It is ranked better than UT-Austin or GT overall, but ranked lower than both of them in engineering. I hear that UT-Austin is very good at engineering (ranked 11). Georgia Tech is ranked better than UT at engineering (ranked 5). Taking into account that Georgia Tech is in-state for you, GT might be a good choice. But if you don’t like Georgia Tech (try visiting the school and see if you change your mind), then both of the other schools are also good.

I’ve visited all three. I’m worried that if I go to UT or GT I’ll end up not liking engineering. But I’m also worried if I go to UVA, I’ll end up loving engineering and wishing I could have gone to a school better in it.

Ah, i see. UVA is certainly not horrible at engineering (I’m a high-school senior, and I’m considering going to UVA School of Engineering), so even if you later love engineering, it would still be a good option. But what “Erin’s Dad” says is also true, the three colleges would probably vary widely in how much they cost. Is there a financial incentive, or is finance not a problem?

Net cost after financial aid and scholarships for each school?

Not sure I think UT - Austin has a great engineering program and if you end up not liking it it has a vast number of other programs that they are well known for like business for example. I think G Tech is very cheap for you which is a plus and is also the best at engineering, but that’s all they really offer. UVA maybe lacks a little in engineering, but are the most well rounded of the three academically as a whole. So you got a tough choice. Research them and see what the pros and cons of each are and them make your own decision.

^ One could argue UT is the most well-rounded academically of the three since it has more academic programs ranked among the top in the nation across more disciplines than either UVA or GT (many more than Rice or Vandy, for that matter). It also has the strongest international reputation of the three.
