UVa vs Northwestern

Berkeley has 3 races (asian, white, hispanics) that have 2 digit % representation in the university. UVa has 2 races of the same representation, and a single race dominates more than 60%. Diversity? Yes, but not THAT great.

You continue to attack me with the same tricks by saying I’m talking about things I never experienced. I clearly said in the past two posts that whatever I’m saying is based on the past CC posts, (and I even gave you the link), in which one of the posters is a current UVa professor.

Plus you still have questions to answer. Just because you and your friends did not experience any discrimination, must it mean that UVa doesn’t have racism? Please note that my statement about UVa’s racism is that “UVa does not tolerate open discrimination, but nonetheless there’s more than its peer schools like Michigan or UCLA” Your arguments are entirely based on attacking me perrsonally that I don’t attend UVa and your personal example that you haven’t experience racism so there must not be racism, which is a logically fallacy.

Folks, please remember that the OP is trying to think through UVA vs. Northwestern. Berkeley, etc. are irrelevant.

thank you for all your help guys! Ive decided to enroll at UVa and im so excitedddd!! :)

yeah, when i really considered all the factors, i decided that for my area of interest (which is like…history/humanities, bio, art …aka everything lol) and for undergrad, the two schools are relatively the same, so it came down to where id have a better time and that was financially less of a burden (as i plan to go to grad school)…thus i picked the school with the better weather and that was closer to home (dont wanna fly back every break) – also, i feel like the atmosphere at UVa was more relaxed. plus, i felt like UVa has a slightly more popular arts dept…

all in all, an education is what you make of it, name/rank of school dont count for much in my book :)

im happy with my decision and i was so glad to hear all your input!

Kixlover…I’m thrilled that you’ve reached your decision and are at peace with it. D is STILL agonizing over the same two schools (Northwestern and UVa). We went out to dinner tonight and Talked about her pro/con list for the two which is more or less equal. I’m eager for Saturday to come and go so we can move on. We’ll let you know her final decision. Good luck to you next year!

Congratulations kixlover. I think you’ll be very happy at Virginia.

Kixlover…I think you made a very astute choice. Virginia is so close to the heartbeat of US government and many children of federal employees will be in your class. History and Humanties are very strong at Virginia and the social experience is varied and outstanding with four beautiful seasons a year.

best wishes and wasn’t it nice to have such a great choice? Graduate school loans and pricetags should be a part of this decision in a major recession.

Congrats!! And the next four years of life are the best :)

I have to agree, UVAorBust posts are generally too…zealous. There are all of those problems here. There are also those problems at other schools. UVa students are trying to take charge, but a lot of those problems involve those in top positions.
On the flip side, it doesn’t mean all students are affected. Many, like myself, roll through college knowing about the issues but never really dealing firsthand.

On another thought, I would think Chicago would be more OP-condusive. There is a large “southern money” presence on grounds, and while it’s easy to dodge, I would think it’s almost non-existant at Northwestern.

I hope ignorance is blissful to you…

Well, the southern part anyway. There’s no escaping the fact that all of America’s best universities have large moneyed contingents in their student bodies. How could it be otherwise? People with money will do what they can, including prep, legacies, what have you.
