Hi, I got accepted to to both and I am seriously considering both. While I prefer Virginia cuz it is traditional and seems to have better recognition and strengths in the field of politics, Rice is a good school as well and they give scholarship. Which one would you suggest? (Honestly, Rice's huge disadvantage, at least to me, is that it's located in Texas. Never thought of studying in that area). Both have residential colleges and one thing that I slightly worry about is that UVA is known to be very preppy and that frats are huge there. Btw, I am an international student.

I wonder why you applied to a college you never though to attend? I’d take Rice. Enjoy tthe advantages of a private college.

If Rice is cheaper, go to Rice. It’s an excellent university.

As an international student, Houston would be a much more diverse city where you are likely to find people & food from home when you’re homesick.

UVA’s campus is gorgeous and Rice’s campus is also incredibly beautiful just different architectural styles. However, given the chance between the two of them, I would have to say Rice. although uva is well regarded as one of the best public schools in the nation, Rice is smaller and equally (if not more) prestigious in many areas. While less of the general public may not have heard of Rice, I guarantee major companies and grad schools have. You will most likely get much better research opportunities at Rice than at uva too.

It depends on what you’re looking for in a school. Uva has a rep for being incredibly preppy and that’s halfway true. But when I was on campus I could tell there were a lot of different types of people, not just frat bros. Uva is big enough to were you can easily find your niche.

uva is a large school. you can find your niche there if you don’t do preppy. but rice is more affordable and there’s no huge advantage of UVA over Rice, if any advantage at all. What will you major in?

jkeil911 I am considering majoring in politics/IR and while I know that Rice is a good school, the impression that I have is that it is more math and science and that its politics department is relatively limited compared to that of UVA

yes, Gimhae, but I think that is changing. UVA itself is no great shakes in political science. It might be better than Rice, but is it half-tuition better? I doubt it. This is undergrad education, OP, and it isn’t all that important where you go because you’re going to have to go on to get more education. People are going to look at your GPA, not where you went to school. Save your money and work your butt off at Rice.
