I was accepted early action to UVA, but I just received an offer of admission to the BA International Honours Programme with the University of St Andrews and the College of William and Mary from St. Andrews (I was also accepted to a four-year Masters program at St Andrews). My major would be history, either way, but as I've never been to St. Andrews, only William and Mary and UVA, it's been hard for me to compare the two offers in terms of student life.

I was wondering if anyone has done this program before or knows more about it? I've found some info online, but it's mostly general class, residence, and stuff like that.

I really like Ancient History, specifically Egypt, something UVA doesn't offer many classes on but St. Andrews does. However, I'm concerned that splitting my college years into two parts will take away from the overall experience. I would probably spend my first year at St. Andrews, next two years at W and M, then my last year at St. Andrews.

I'm still waiting on a couple schools, but these are my top two at the moment.

Hey, I think W&M should be a excellent chioce since its best major is history!
I also received the offer from W&M and I’d like to go there.~
Hope you all the best !

Yeah, my only issue is that I would be spending 2 years at William and Mary and the other two at St. Andrews if I did the Honours programme, and I’m worried about what it would do to the college experience/social life.

My son is struggling over W&M or UVA (going to both admissions weekend to help decide), but did not apply for the St. Andrews option (wants to major in math and physics). Had he been interested in history and gotten into that program, I would have suggested he do W&M/St. Andrews. The only draw back is I believe the tuition is substantially higher for this program than the typical W&M tuition for in state students (assuming you are in state). What better places to study history than England and colonial Williamsburg.

Hobnobbing with royalty at St Andrews. Thats where William met Kate. Also the home to the most famous golf course in the world. That alone would be enough for me. This is an easy decision for W&M/St Andrews. What an opportunity. Good luck.

I am in-state, so UVA would be cheaper. For me that’s a large factor that’s making me lean towards it, but my family fortunate enough to afford either option. Actually, I think I’m more worried about the price than my parents are. My dad would probably side with the Joint-degree program just to make sure I know he wants me to go to wherever I feel is best without tuition being the deciding factor.

I’m looking to go to graduate school, as well. So I’m not sure which school grad schools would look more favorably on, if there is one.

Hey,
I am in the joint degree programme right now at St Andrews. PM me and I’d be happy to answer any of your questions. And though I’m not a history major, two of my flatmates are so I do know a little about that subject here too.

My problem with the joint degree program at William & Mary/St Andrews is that after making lots of friends during your first year of college, you then leave and go to the other campus, and have to start all over again from a social standpoint. Then, after you make friends there, you then go back to the other college in either year three of four, and have to make friends all over again.

My son is going to St Andrews in September, but did not apply to the joint program for this reason.

I suspect that most of the friendship issues in the WM/SA program are solved by the participating students becoming very close with each other. Would love to hear form a current or former WM/SA student about this, as my daughter (2013) is considering this program.

Hi. Just wondering how the joint program is going for you. My son has just started to think about it. He’d be interested in Economics. Did you start at St. A or W&M. Any info would be terrific as we begin…

I’m at William and Mary right now, and I think you really need to decide what environment is best for you. While the WM/SA offers an incredibly unique experience, you will be in college for four years. Pick the place that fits your personality best. Also, be sure to give yourself options.

My daughter is applying to the St. Andrews/Wm&Mary program now. Being that the previous posts were from last year (and the St.Andrews/Wm&Mary program was new) what is your opinion of the program now? I have seen mixed reviews. She is also going to apply straight to St. Andrews for an MA. How is it working socially and academically. I have also heard St. Andrews is very hands off, which my daughter understands, does that seem to be your experience? Thank you in advance for your reply.

My son was just accepted to the University of St. Andrews for a joint degree in Film Studies and English. He is also applying to William & Mary/St. Andrews joint degree program. If he gets in to that program, he must decide whether he wants to split up his college experience. But if he goes to St. Andrews only, will his job prospects be as good in the US? Do employers know it is a great school, etc? I’d love to hear from students and/or parents who have experience in both options. Thank you!!

@scarlyle I am a current fourth year student in the program and would love to answer any questions you have. As for the ones you mention, yes his prospects will be as good as those in the US and possibly even better. I assume you are American, if so he will not only have US prospects, but the visa he gets to study in the UK will allow him to work there over the summer and until Oct after he graduates. After that he can apply for a work visa if he wishes. Also due to the demand from north american students St Andrews has a career advisor just for them (http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/careers/aboutus/meettheteam/). The advisor helps with both US and UK job opportunities. Additionally if he does the joint degree program, he has the resources of two school career centers (and twice the alumni network).
If you have other questions feel free to message me.

Hi @StAWM2015, I recently accepted my offer to the Joint International Relations program with William and Mary and I will be spending my first year at St Andrews. I feel really fortunate to be accepted there and I do have a few questions for you as a current student. Do you happen to know if the students from this program get accepted into top graduate schools? If so, then which ones? I filled out my accommodation two days ago and I really hope that I get to live in Agnes. Was it hard for you as a freshman to get your first choice? Please let me know! Thank you and good luck with your studying!
As a parent in the program, I am disappointed in the level of communication from both schools. The Facebook page is gone. The wordpress blog is gone. When you call William and Mary and tell them you have a child arriving next week they say we don’t know anything about that, we are the “Host School” and to contact your “Home school” St. Andrews. I have not received an invoice from either school, no estimate of the cost of attendance for this year. Basically, I am writing to College Confidential hoping that somebody, anybody from either of these schools reads this board and establishes a reliable site that answers the questions we have. A parent or student should be able to contact EITHER school to get an answer.
Note: American parents who are heading to Scotland for the first time with your child (in about 2 weeks) you are no doubt wondering about that transition. International Banking, visas, health records requirements, Amazon UK, bedding and linens, airport transportation, area hotels, first week schedule, flights, etc.
This should be the age of 24/7 customer support, Internet-based support forums, electronic communications options and electronic banking. This program needs a more detailed FAQ that applies to both schools.
My daughter was admitted to the W & M/St. Andrews program, but chose another school. Before applying, we visited St. Andrews and loved it. I would equate it to something like GW, a campus in the city, but with more historic buildings. You step out of the buildings and you are on the streets of St. Andrews. Nice campus and friendly town. Ate at a pizza shop and walked around. Appears to be a safe and vibrant city. Every bit as nice as W & M, but with a city feel.
Exam results for English high school students trying to enter St Andrews will be released tomorrow so it’ll be very busy tomorrow onwards, but you can try messaging some people on those FB pages and they’ll be able to put you into contact with the relevant people.
