If you're OSS and you had to choose between the liberal arts schools at U-M and UVA and assuming neither gives you honors/scholarships, where would you go and for what reasons? Looking for unbiased statements. Thanks! (And please also assume that the weather is the same for both schools)

I'd fly straight to Ann Arbor without a doubt.

please point to specific aspects. thanks

it would really depend on the major you are pursuing.

political science and possibly economics

Although Michigan is ranked much higher than UVA in Political Science and Economics, at the undergraduate level, you really want to focus on the overall quality of the instituion. Both Michigan and UVA are awesome. So what it boils down to is overall fit.

as a poli sci major, i can tell you first hand that the department here is outstanding

Academically, Michigan is the clear favorite for what you want to major in. However, the schools have very different feels. Michigan is colder, bigger, more fun if you ask me, and has really down-to-earth students. Virginia is warmer and has more of a private feel and I've heard its students are upper-class and fairly snobby.

From what I've heard, UVA has a "southern" feel to it -- and Michigan is distinctly "midwestern." I haven't been to UVA, so I don't know first hand -- but I know someone who went there and that's his impression. As he was from the north -- he didn't care for it. But UVA has a very loyal alumni - so clearly lots of people love the place. The answer to which is best for you depends on --- YOU!

The campus here is good, but I heard UVa's campus is simply amazing. It seems like a lot of OOS students have trouble deciding between UVa and Michigan. Based on what I've heard, it appears that Econ and poli sci are perhaps two of the best majors you can do here at the LSA. Visit both schools and see what you think will fit.

I heard that UVa is very much into Greek Life. My friend went to their presentation in NY and there were some alums there who even mentioned its prominence. I actually really wanted to apply to UVa early in my college search, but didn't because it was a super super reach for me and I wasn't going to write all those essays for a school that I was going to be rejected from =)

I have a friend at Stanford who visited the campus at UVa and said that it's absolutely gorgeous. If you're really into nature and equestrian stuff, UVa is located in a region that's big on that. If your into the four main sports, Michigan is probably the place to be(maybe around the country). A friend of mine who visited Michigan was intimidated by the size. I actually like the idea of it being it's own city. UVa is definitely smaller.

I think UMich is more diverse. From previous posts on this board I've seen people write that there are quite a few Asians.

Chibearsfan, I also heard that UVa could be snobby. To be neutral, it's definitely preppy and it's a very wealthy school. I read somewhere that among all public universities, they receive the most private donations.

Good luck making your decision!

Michigan isn't really all that "big." You don't ever see all 30k+ people at the same time on campus. It actually feels quite small. The college town here at Ann Arbor is good. Sometimes it's cold to walk around, but pretty much will have whatever you're looking for. If you need to go off campus, you can just take the bus. It's easy.
