Congratz on your acceptance to UVA. I applied to 7 schools and got into everywhere BUT my top choice, UVA. Basically all the schools I applied to were match or low reach. With my top choice and probably the school that would provide me with the best career toward law, I had to choose between Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and University of Pennsylvania. I finally eliminated it to Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth and evidently will be attended Harvard class of 2014. Maybe I’ll get a shot at UVA for grad school.

Our son also is considering UVA vs UR and we live in Virginia. Our impression is that UR students have more opportunities to work with faculty, although maybe we are wrong. We are not aware of any data on what UVA graduates do and what % go to graduate and professional schools. (I’d want to exclude medical and law school from those figures–law school especially–job market prospects for law students don’t look good).

We were also sold on the more open curriculum at UR and liked the fact that it is half the size of UVA. We attended a biology class, which that day turned out to be more of a review session that was led by two graduate students. (This was the Friday before the Easter holiday and no we did not have the impression that this is done a lot.) The graduate students were well-prepared and engaged the students who wanted to participate. I was surprised to see two boys in the back, where we were, who from their inattention either knew all of the material or want to flunk out of the class.
