UVA vs UNC

Okay so I applied to both and I'm well aware that both schools are vastly different. But in my high school alot of my friends feel that there basically the same (i'm from tx). So what I wanted to know is what do you guys think sets UVA apart from UNC?
also in terms of my major which is bio and how easy it is to adapt from OOS
posted this in both forums to hear both sides

UVA is better

I agree, UVA is better. UNC is easier to get into...

"UNC is easier to get into... "

Absolutely not.

with either school. I suspect that UVa has more name recognition outside the US.

i agree with guillaume, it is certainly not easier. It is much harder

Guillaume,

The Charlottesville newspaper's sports editor says that UVa's academic standards means bad athletics. Since UNC's teams are better, it must mean UVa is a better school.

Lol! whenever a UVA team plays badly, My husband, a UVA grad says: "well the scholar athletes had a hard time today"

"The Charlottesville newspaper's sports editor says that UVa's academic standards means bad athletics. Since UNC's teams are better, it must mean UVa is a better school."

What twisted logic. Great athletics and great education are not mutually exclusive.

fn18: I might have the same problem should I get into UVa on top of UNC (early acceptance!). Have you visited? I've visited both and the atmosphere is very different from Charlottesville to Chapel Hill. Academically you can't go wrong so think about where you'd be more comfortable living for the next 4 years.

Good Luck!

well i got into unc and i am still waiting for uva. however i plan on visiting both very soon, but i was just curious to hear everyone's thoughts. thanks

I'm in the same boat as fn18.

I don't really have a clear idea of what UVA is like, especially compared to UNC. Someone please answer this seriously.

I personally thought UVA was prettier, though both campuses are beautiful. You should really just visit and decide for yourself. They're both great schools.

Read this recent UVa report on how many depts including bio compare to UNC and others. You might be surprised.

I'm in the same boat too; got into UNC 2 weeks ago but I'm still waiting on UVA. Leaning towards UNC though, kind of want to get out of VA. But both campuses are gorgeous and have incredible academic programs.

UNC students can cross-register at Duke and NC State, which is very easy to do with the Robertson Bus and TTA. You therefore have the considerable resources of two or three major universities at your fingertips.

UVA is a fantastic school, but you'd have a lot more options available at UNC.

honestly, the two schools are so nearly equal that wherever you go, the quality of your education will be phenomenal. the major differences are the students/surrouding area. i've lived in VA my whole life, and while I LOVE uva, the reputation for having a bunch of fratty, southern, good ol' boys is accurate. it's really your personal preference whether you like that or not. on the other hand, the traditions at uva are unmatchable- thomas jefferson's ideas and legacies really do live on. BUT, unc is a lot less preppy, and is a bit more liberal.

long story short, both are fabulous schools, and you really can't go wrong either way. I guess my only advice is to visit! and see who gives you more money :)

UNC is in NO WAY easier to get in than UVA. UNC only accepts 17% OOS, UVA 30% (ish). Neither are easy to get into and both are wonderful schools. Academics at UVA may be a notch above, but once again, UNC is a great school.

There was a whole debate on this just last year, and the year before, and the year before that. Search "UNC" on here, you'll get a ton of old opinions and see how kids made their decision.
