UVA vs. University of Michigan

Hi, I was recently accepted into both UVA and UMich and am trying to weigh the pros and cons of each school. At UVA, I would be in their biomedical engineering program, while at Michigan I would be completing the 5 year program with a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology and a MS in Biomedical engineering. I have visited Michigan, and am hoping to visit UVA soon. I’m interested in research, studying abroad, and internships. If anyone has any comments on either of the programs or the schools in general, it would be really appreciated! Thank you!

@ekb1998 were you accepted EA into UVA or regular decision? Just curious.

Are you in-state for either? Are finances an issue?

I’d say they’re both equally reputable, so it all comes down to your preference. What did u think about the campus, how do you think you’ll fit, and do you wanna be in college for 5 years, etc.

Since you’re comparing a 4 year program to a 5 year program, it’s a little bit of an apples to oranges comparison. The five year program likely will cost more, but having a masters may give you a bit of a boost in your potential salary. Do your research on potential salaries coming out of these two programs, and compare your cost of attendance to both. Don’t forget that going for that extra year at UMich will “cost” you a year’s salary if you were to go to UVa.

Good luck on your decision.

@radgreek I was accepted EA for both. Also, @intparent I would be out of state for both, so Michigan would be slightly cheaper, but not by much.

You will be getting financial paperwork with an ‘offer’ of scholarships and loans from each school. Your decision may be based on that. Some other considerations are, as noted, the weather and distance from your home. Believe it or not you will want to come home on breaks. The costs all add up. Other than those things, you will have to decide which has the best exact course of study for what you want…and for a future career. Best Wishes.
